agreed, although for some reason the last few press conferences have been light on actual data from either here or South Africa.

although seemingly enough for Whitty to effectively apply a lockdown.
The unwillingness to learn lessons from other countries has been a feature since day one of this crisis. We were slow to close our borders at the start as others did; we failed at track and trace because we had a centralised system compared to other countries which took a regional approach; we repeated the disaster created in Italy by sending infected patients back into nursing and care homes. Now Whitty has been almost scornful of the South African data which now shows a huge reduction in hospitalisations for Omicron compared to Delta...for all age groups.
What is it about our Government experts which makes them think they know better than the rest of the world? Is it some sort of superior attitude or another example of "British exceptionalism"?

You can’t really compare what Kyle did to what Mendy has done. Absolutely worlds apart.

I honestly don’t know of anyone who stuck to the lockdown rules. They were impossible and repressive.
I had to laugh while listening to Any Questions on Radio 4.that the senior civil servant supposed to be investigating parties had been replaced as there had been some sort of event in his own office.
As the politicians from all sides had their four penn'orth it made me wonder if any of these people living in greenhouses should put their stones completely.
The higher levels of government should have practiced what they had been preaching but l would guess that loads of them were at it and the media too have been conducting their own cover ups certainly loads of people had been breaking the rules back to the times when it was warm enough to sunbathe on Brighton beach. Each news bulletin showed many people totally disregarding rules.
The sad thing is that of those who did followed the rules fully, many lost the opportunity to get to the bedsides of their dying family members.
When you look around the world, nearly every country is doing it differently and their citizens are reacting in different ways.

What’s the way out of this?

Over 90% of the country is double or triple jabbed and we are looking at a full lockdown after Christmas.

How many more lockdowns is it going to take? How many more jabs?

Compliance at this stage, nearly two years in, needs a very clear exit path. What is it? What’s the way out of all this after nearly two years?
I don't have a scooby but the problem is nobody else knows for sure either.

It won’t just be the NHS, though, it will be the transport sector as well and then others. And it will have to happen quickly, too, all while the messages about boosters/tidal waves/NHS collapsing are still ringing in ears. Once people who have tested positive see other people who have tested positive not having to isolate for the ten days, they will likely follow suit- especially in this fortnight, and it’ll be hard for them to deduce anything other than it was less serious than had been predicted.

I just feel governments have been relying on the same tools and mindset that served them for earlier variants, when Omicron is a different beast altogether, and one that was never likely to be controlled.
We were just having this conversation. The 10 day isolation period appears to be the issue rather than Covid. London is short of firefighters, ambulance staff etc. But theyre not all lying in a hospital bed. Theyre at home watching TV cos they had a positive test. On a personal level, Id rather a firefighter with mild Covid respond to my emergency than none at all. But that's not fair on his/her work mates. Its such a conundrum.

It’s not British exceptionalism. The Dutch are lagging in getting booster shots out because they just didn’t believe the Israeli data (very different population group, don’t you know?) they received in September and wanted to conduct their own research. Maybe we need fewer ‘national’ experts and more global/regional experts collaborating. Good job we discovered Zoom…

Fair comment. I am sure you are correct that other countries are just as arrogant as we appear to have been. But isn't it depressing that the world can't work together on something that affects all of us? i just feel that our attitude towards the South African scientists who are experts at dealing with infectious viruses (because of their experience with HIV) has felt almost "Colonial."

if the first 2 worked as promised then people wouldn't be so doubtful of having the same thing for a 3rd time. Especially when government briefings have turned into sales pitches rather than scientific presentations.

Could, might, should.

Dutch go into lockdown on Sunday, my phone has just advised.

the first two did work as promised - there was always a suggestion that a booster would be needed to see us through the winter flu season - the new variant made that requirement nailed on

no, they haven't, or they'd last more than 3 months and the booster would be updated, not the same thing they have left over which "should, might" give "up to" an ideal level of protection. For how long, a month? then what? if it decays as quickly as its predecessor?

No wonder people are waiting, if the booster gives permanent immunity for years then people can then always top up when it's proven. At the moment, it's 50% less efficient than we were told when it was pitched to us first time so it's no surprise people make a human decision. There's enough going for it to be guinea pigs that will demonstrate the long-term effects.

Cosmetic surgery and a lot of other operations can go to the back of the line, i had three friends die during lock down they were put down to COVID but they had cancer and were put back multiple times
Sorry to hear about your friends.

I'd be directing my ire though towards the people that have taken up such a lot of NHS resources because they are too thick/selfish (or both) to have had the vaccine.

I’ve been saying that all along.

I’ve got zero tolerance or sympathy for the twats. Couldn’t give a singular toss if they all croaked it crying on the hospital steps.
Harsh but after seeing some of the footage from Parliament Square today, I’m tempted to concur. Almost as pissed off with the police though to be honest. They’re more than happy to wade into football fans indiscriminately for little reason, yet these cunts are provoking them like fuck and the police are just standing there doing nothing.

Piers Corbyn from a few days ago - take the vaccines and you'll have AIDS by March - sadly this is serious otherwise his performance would be completely laughable
