Fan Culture

Should we ever get over our inferiority complex?

Some fans will still be nervous about the second leg vs Sporting, but that, hopefully, will make the second leg a better experience when we probably win 2-0 whilst playing 2-3 youngsters.

Howard (The OP) is a long known nervous, typical City fan, so he could potentially write that better than I’ve tried above.

I think we have 3 categories of supporter. FOCs, 30-60 and younger fans.

FOCs will always think Typical City is about to return at any point, but are probably enjoying our recent success more than the other two sets.

30-60 year old fans. These also have the Typical City, but didn’t experience as much of the shite in 77-08. I’m 42 and remember about 87 onwards, but 1989 until now better.

Youngsters 20 and below don’t know anything but City winning. Our overall dynamic will change as a fanbase if our winning streak carries on for a while as the FOCs will stop going for one reason or the other.
My first text after the win was, it’s only halftime ;-)

City's fan culture is defined by a set of fans who not long ago were admired as being the most loyal and supportive in the country, to one that is parodied by the new generation of young internet fans as being the opposite. There's quite rightly an irritation amonsgt large sections of the fanbase about this. Opposition fans routinely sing "where were you when you were shit" to a fanbase who were actually here when we were shit.
Good point. Success hasn’t really changed City fans as much as it has changed the perception of other fans about us, true or not. And Newcastle fans will probably face the same thing if they eventually become successful

still the same old city fan, sense of humour, always in doubt, but amazed at how a club / team can be transformed by the combination of good owners, good CEO, good management. I think this is a forgotten necessity that has been going on for decades but often miss interpreted.

started off ok but then went off on a totaly different tangent !

Living in the Fylde coast a lot of my friends are life long Bpool fans. When I pointed out to one how many plastics they attracted after promotion to the prem many dropping long held armchair rag and dipper allegiance, he pointed out that City's gates have nearly doubled since Maine Rd days. Found it hard to disagree where have our new fans come from, been on a jam packed Maine Rd many times but have so been on gates of well under 20,000 against the likes of Wimbledon and Oxford . Football had reawakening after Italia 90, gates up everywhere but think we benefited more than most

Many like myself were rags until 2012.

Some City fans of my era 50yrs + still get painful flashbacks to the bad times so when the new City concede anything we panic a bit, Pep has cured this as at worst we concede the occasional corner or throw in thus setting off the occasional jitter and also forcing Ederson to put down his pie chips and gravy . It is an honour to be a City fan right now .
