The reality for him then is he would be living out the rest of his life in a bunker hoping he could potentially resurface in 30 years when the nuclear winter might start dying down. Surely even a madman wouldn’t want that.

It's quite staggering. Putin had the chance to make Russia a potentially prosperous country and a respected member and leader of the international community. I can live without it being democratic as, like the Chinese, the Russians will accept an autocrat as long as they have financial security.

I used to think his world view was often sounder than the West's, with our consistent inconsistency and often knee-jerk, ill thought-out reactions to events. I agreed with him on Syria, that a bad strong man like Assad was still better than the chaos and humanitarian disasters we've seen in Yemen, Iraq, Libya and the former Yugoslavia.

Yet he's chosen the opposite path of kleptocracy and paranoia. Hopwfully the sanctions will bw so severe that the russian people and military will turn on him.

That is a danger, as there is already no justification or even a benefit to Russia for what what they are doing already, they must know sanctions for taking even part of Ukraine is gonna cripple them, maybe even more impact than they gain from Donbas region natural resources? It also further isolates them on the world stage. What is the actual end game here, seeing who blinks first?

Its hard to know exactly what he is thinking, his "history speech" was very unhinged at times with real anger, reminded me a little of how Germany played up the humiliation they felt after WW1 (this was deliberate from their politicians to stoke anger, angry people are easy to rally to your cause - see also current politics in the West for how effective it is). He was angry that land he sees as part of the old Russian Empire is no longer theirs, even blaming soviet leaders for allowing them independence etc.

I guess the question is how much control does Putin wield if the Oligarchy start to feel the pinch of sanctions, would his support vanish if he goes too far or is he completely unopposed?
 
The Germans are closing off the pipeline immediately I’m hoping we have enough of our own or we go without.

We are talking about sanctions but they don’t usually work and the Russians saw how we withdrew from Afghanistan, it sent the wrong message to Putin

Fuck knows mate. The bloke’s off his tits and Russian nuclear publicly stated doctrine is to use the threat of nuclear weapons to “escalate to de-escalate” or more accurately escalate to win - in other words threaten the use of nuclear weapons to get a concession.

I’d not be entirely shocked to hear him talk about nuclear strikes to get the west to back down from sanctions although that’s a fair jump in action reaction - he might rely on one of the clauses of their nuclear policy which talks about the use of conventional weapons that threaten the very existence of the state as a pretext for such a escalation / retaliation.

This is my worry too. We need to do something to try and reign him in but it's going to be very tricky getting the balance right. He's that deranged that he probably won't even listen to his best mates so fuck knows what chance we have!
