Russian invasion of Ukraine

A ex-UK General today on BBC3.

Putin and Russia would not win a war against NATO and it's 30 country armed forces. Besides that, Russia's economy would be crippled by long lasting economic sanctions.

If he hasn't already, Putin will eventually realise he has f*cked up big time invading Ukraine and facing off with America, Europe, NATO, and most countries in the World.

Sadly Putin's cronies who surround him are too scared of him to tell him the truth, and to put a stop to 'Putin's and his war'.

What if China side with them?

Putin must of rubbed up to China and N Korea before making his advance

Someone else was on tele earlier saying that Putin has been in power so long he thinks he can do whatever he wants and has surrounded himself with hundreds of “yes”men who won’t challenge him.

He’s become deluded and drunk on his own power and there’s nobody to tell him “no”.

Jens Stoltenberg was saying earlier today that the might of NATO would include every single NATO member if Russia were to attack a NATO country. Russia wouldn’t stand a chance really, but it would be a different story with China Iran Pakistan and North Korea on their side.

Hopefully we’ll never find out.

I see on the BBC news thst Germany and Italy don't want strong enough sanctions to threaten Putin's position.
No surprise. Unless they happen Putin wins.

NATO's military is 12x bigger than Russia's.

I suppose it's all meaningless because it would becomes a nuclear war, but in conventional warfare it's completely 1 sided.

ON BBC radio earlier they had someone on who said if Italy goes heavy on sanctions the economic consequences will be so unpopular there'll be an early election and change of government.

There was something on this thread earlier that said Germany was about to increase its gas imports from Russia tomorrow, not decrease it!

I doubt even Putin thinks he can win a conventional war against NATO. Russia like any other country would almost certainly fail in conventional warfare against just the US alone. I think the problem here is that there is an absolute madman with a huge cache of nuclear weapons. There has been concern in the past about certain regimes trying to become nuclear powers and major efforts to stop it happening. Here we have a despot in charge of the biggest nuclear arsenal on the planet and seemingly threatening to use it.

Id expect so. That will too and fro a lot over the next few days. Will be key to Russia to get lots of troops in to the area.
Thanks. Although, other than an air strike on one earlier, it's the first I've heard mentioned. I guess it'll become clearer in the next few days.

Over the last 20 years he has picked 5 wars against minnows and won all 5 and likely lost sight of his own limitations.

It's very hard to see how this war ends well for Putin. Ukraine has 40 million people, and a limitless supply of weapons and money from NATO flooding in across 2,000km of border with Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary that he can't stop because they're in NATO and untouchable. That's the recipe for a Vietnam style endless war.

Back home, all his allies will lose all their money and the people will be plunged into a 1990's post-USSR depression.

I think the biggest sign he's lost touch was announcing his wish to bring back 1917 Russia. That was a man telling the world he wanted to invade half a dozen more countries after Ukraine, which you would never say out loud even if you planned it.

  1. The United States ($778 billion)
  2. China ($252 billion [estimated])
  3. India ($72.9 billion)
  4. Russia ($61.7 billion)
  5. United Kingdom ($59.2 billion)
  6. Saudi Arabia ($57.5 billion [estimated])
  7. Germany ($52.8 billion)
  8. France ($52.7 billion)
  9. Japan ($49.1 billion)
  10. South Korea ($45.7 billion)

  11. They probably spend more than the rest of the world added together on their military budget. There is no almost in it!
