Russian invasion of Ukraine

Yes we definitely should but renewables will never be the whole answer.

I also think we should be investing in nuclear and the decision to stop fracking was short sighted and based on pressure from NIMBYs in Tory constituencies. A highly regulated shale gas industry would help our energy security immeasurably.

gas is pointless, it's just a half way measure.

He has literally come out and praised Putin for this invasion

why would he be fighting him ?
He’s praised the move as genius but when you listen to the whole quote he says it’s very sad and wouldn’t have happened on his watch.

All sides of the internal political debate in Russia and the US are using parts of the quote to fit whatever narrative they want.

The fact is Trump isn’t in power so it’s meaningless and Biden doesn’t warrant any blame for this act of aggression.

Trump added that bit on at the end of for optics, he's shown a clear admiration for dictators / authoritarians over the years.

The guy is a fucking prick and should never be anywhere near a position of power again.

what would Trump have done differently if he was in power

agree. It’s very depressing for the ukraine. I keep seeing politicians/ mps and others talking about sanctions. Right now they are doing nothing for the people in the ukraine. They are completely on their own

if you aren’t in nato / are a smaller country your screwed
Trusting the west to do the right thing is turning out to be the worst decision Ukraine could have made.
We should be ashamed

Trump is as mad as Putin who understood that being like minded Trump would have reacted based on ego, swagger and already be at war with him. Putins threats yesterday could not be any clearer could they.

The bit about it not happening on his watch is utter bullshit and was said to try and blame Biden.
On Trump’s watch Russia deployed biological weapons in the U.K. The only reason Russia didn’t invade Ukraine during the Trump presidency is that Putin wasn’t ready to do it yet. He’s been building up to this for years.

That’s what it’s all about. The strategic position of Ukraine. The Baltic States will be next (they’re already completely surrounded by Russia, Belarus and Kaliningrad, it would be piss easy for Russia to take them). All round giving Russia better access to the important waterways close to them and bridging Kaliningrad back to Russia.

Ukraine is also the fifth biggest producer of wheat in the world. Russia has a small, weak, and unvaried economy and adding an extra 9% of the world’s wheat production to its GDP has its values to them.

There’s also the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is a different denomination in Ukraine. Putin has always been big on making the traditional Eastern Orthodox Church a more prominent feature of Russian life and he doesn’t recognise the Ukraine Orthodoxy and wants rid of it.
Was a very good read. Obviously many responses asking why Russia don't just use "their side" of the black sea for shipping ? A few responses saying that area too shallow or gas pipelines there ? I'm not sure but 100 % goes some way of explaining why Russia invaded

Fucking non-stop with you

Can this thread not focus on the events in the Ukraine?

There are so many other threads to score these points

The hatred/dislike for Johnson and the Tories is widespread amongst us - but does it need to be distracting this thread?
The historic relationship between our Government, Putin and his cronies and their subsequent response to this event is fair game for this thread I would have thought mate.

Zinky gets front page on the DT reporting that his Instagram messages calling Putin some choice names have been deleted by, er, Instagram, but the Rags sponsorship by Aeroflot gets shoved down at the bottom of the second page. Nothing like a free trip to St. Petersburg on a chartered Aeroflot flight when yer make the final? Guest of honour at the final? Gotta be Vladimir, courtesy of Gazprom. Any word from Uefa? Compare the speed of the two decisions - stuffing MCFC and switching venues for the 2022 CL Final!

This is a really bad thread, sorry.

Russia didn't need Crimea to have a black sea port, and securing Crimea didn't stop the fact they still only have trade through there because Turkey allows it.

Also the nonsense put forward about the US killing Russian trade, and literally parroting Putin talking points?
Then why did they take Crimea then ? Also relying constantly on other countries to lend you trade routes they can revoke in the blink of an eye isn't really in the best interests of a country. I don't agree it's a bad thread but its a insight into why this is happening because many don't understand why this invasion is happening. Everyone saying NATO NATO just isn't enough for me

Even though he's spent the past 72 hours praising Putin's aggression in Ukraine?

You'd be forgiven for thinking he's part of Putin's government this week.

Ukraine is also the fifth biggest producer of wheat in the world. Russia has a small, weak, and unvaried economy and adding an extra 9% of the world’s wheat production to its GDP has its values to them. We will be consuming wheat for much longer after we’ve stopped using gas and oil.

There’s also the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is a different denomination in Ukraine. Putin has always been big on making the traditional Eastern Orthodox Church a more prominent feature of Russian life and he doesn’t recognise the Ukraine Orthodoxy and wants rid of it.
One of the representations of Ukraine flag is blue for the sky above and yellow for the many wheat fields.

This is all on Putin.

This is not on the west and we have fuck all to be ashamed about ffs.
I agree it's on Putin but when the fucking EU can't even agree on this , Boris's bluster & Biden's pathetic stuff yesterday then yes, shame on us for sitting back and just watching
