Russian invasion of Ukraine

BTW does anyone know where OPEC and the Saudis are in all of this? They could easily satisfy world oil demands and stabilise prices (with Russian oil embargoed) by simply turning the wick up a bit. I haven't heard a peep out of Saudi Arabia.

Or - unrelated - out of Japan either. What are the Japs saying / doing?

So RE Japan, apparently them joining the sanctions on Russias central bank is all that’s required to pretty much leave it down to 14% in China and 22% in gold it can’t use.

which is why it’s quite bad for Russia that this happened -

As for OPEC, Biden has apparently been negotiating with Qatar for months to increase their supplies to Europe to replace Russia but it will take a while to ramp up.

All this points out to Putin he could never set foot in any NATO country esp those that border Russia, if they think the Ukraine public are putting up resistance then i wouldnt like to take the polish on in a street war, the footage of WW2 tanks and trucks rolling in are long gone days, sadly the only other option would be a nuclear strike or at minimum non nuclear weapons of mass destruction

The NATO countries are propped up with Russian money. They will put enough sanctions to appease the public’s unrest but not enough to actually harm their own countries or cripple Russia. Political balancing act. It’s a grey murky area and as such the decisions will generally reflect this. Only Putin deals in absolutes.
Actually it's called ratcheting up the sanctions bit by bit. Don't let the truth get in the way of your opinions.

I think of plenty of things all day - right now I am thinking am I the only one with an ignore option on here? Quite often its the "free speech" advocates who don't like stuff - I presume because people are speaking freely about stuff they don't want to hear?
No it was me that brought it up and I enjoy a lot of your posts and we agree on many things.

I was just advising you that posting solely and constantly about Boris/Tories/Brexit on this thread was as boring as it was misplaced. It makes it seem you care more about him than Putin/Ukraine and isn’t a particularly good look.

Feel for the men being forced to stay in Ukraine. Especially young lads who don’t want to fight and whose experience is limited.

Perhaps it would be better to let them leave on condition they never return.

I’m not a particularly warmongery or nationalistic person but even I can sympathise with the idea that If you aren’t willing to fight side by side with your neighbours for your country to exist then why should you be able to come back if they win?

They aren’t all being given guns and sent out to face tanks anyway, something like 40,000 have been called up and armed out of about 3 million. The rest are just helping look after the people who can’t leave, or contributing in non military ways.

Ridiculous.

This is not going at all well for Russia, militarily or politically which will be a huge surprise to Putin and the governing elite. Would not be surprised to see Putin overthrown as a way of out of the shot he has created. Only chance they have got to save some grace and move on. M
Set Russia back for decades this will

The reality is not everyone is a fighter and would probably be more of a hindrance than help. People love to point to world war 2 as a time when men were brave blah blah yet if you look at the figures there were over 100,000 desertions during the war from the British and Commonwealth alone. Some people just can't handle a situation like that and forcing them isn't going to fix that.

Like I said, 99% of them aren’t being asked to fight.

They’ve armed 40,000. The number of fighting age people is 7.5 million.

They are only arming the veterans and the ones who want to fight, the rest are helping in other ways - helping to evacuate people, helping with medical supplies, helping take down the street signs, getting people to shelters, getting food to the elderly.

There’s a million ways to fight for your country’s freedom without a gun in your hand.

Not all were brave in WW2, but still supported their Countries needs
