Russian invasion of Ukraine

@spectatorindex: BREAKING: Moscow says countries sending military equipment to Ukraine will be responsible if they are used against Russian forces.
Of course he's gone say that, he's full off shit, every little things is a threat cos he knows he's fucked with all the aid Ukraine are getting.

Putin is too self obsessed and arrogant to kill himself.

I'm not saying you're wrong in suggesting Putin won't use nukes. He may, or he may not. No-one knows what goes on inside his tiny head.

But I do think you are mistaken if you think he won't use them for fear of it resulting in his death. He would very likely conclude that he could use tactical nukes and that the west would never respond with a nuclear attack against Russia, for fear of starting WW3. And he'd be spot on in that assessment IMO. I cannot conceive of any circumstances where the US would risk tens or hundreds of millions of US lives lost, over a conflict over Ukraine, a country not even in NATO. And if the US wouldn't do it, there's fuck all chance of the UK or France doing it.

So the unpleasant reality is probably that Putin can do what he likes, unless/until he's overthrown from within, or he achieves sufficient of his objectives to be able to claim "mission accomplished".

I'm just hoping that at some point soon there will be an internal tipping point within Russia where those with power around Putin realise he's fucking everything up and remove him. I'm shitting myself if that doesn't happen because he has gone full "fuck-it" mode and I agree, I think he would be up for using nukes.

Come on Kremlin insiders, the World needs a Von Stauffenberg (a successful one) type hero.
Do the idiot in and become the most popular person in history!

Maybe ive watched too much TV, but I was always presumed that if they *really* needed to, superpowers like the US could just take out someone like Putin pretty quickly. I just sorta presumed they'd have someone on the inside at the Kremlin or some secret services with tech that we don't know about or sumat. lol. I can't be the only one who ends up thinking like this? Maybe its just wishful thinking...

Too many Steven Seagal films. Or maybe he's biding his time in the kitchen.

Welcome to your evening bulletin from Mordor, where the President's race to make us more isolated than North Korea gathers pace. Apologies for any repetition of stuff already in the thread. Have been busy and it moves so quickly I just can't read it all.

Some pretty horrifying footage of the bombardment of Kharkov. This is one of the best disposed cities to Russia outside Donbass, not far from the border and with plenty of those Russian=speakers they're supposed to be desperate to protect. Shows that latter claim up for the transparent lie it is.

Looks like they could be planning something even worse for Kiev. I dread to think what news we may wake up to on that score.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy has suggested that American nationals consider leaving now, while there are still a few commercial flights out. Makes you think, even when you're not an American.

I've predictably had to cancel a trip home to visit my mother, who's 88 and with failing eyesight as well as a plethora other medical conditions. She was widowed last summer, has two kids who both live abroad, and is struggling a bit on her own for the first time in 50-odd years.

That's pretty upsetting, as I also cancelled my last planned trip at Christmas owing to travel restrictions imposed following the UK Covid outbreak. But save your thoughts and prayers for the natives of Kharkov and Kiev. They need them far, far more.

PS - Five million roubles would have been 50 grand in sterling last week. By the end of this week, it'll probably just about buy them a new telly.
Maybe you should start your own thread
‘Letter from Mordor’
A la Private Eye.

mods could probably lock off replies to keep it on track (apologies for my ‘mum’…)

I’d be interested in reading a sort of ‘blog’ from the other side…and you are articulate and clearly knowledgeable

I was thinking about this also, even if it was one of his own generals at one of their meetings, he would need a sniper rifle with a telescopic sight to kill him he sits that far away from everyone

I don’t disagree with that assessment but he’s likely level Kyiv without using a nuclear strike before using one. What I mean is he won’t start firing them off at the West or start attacking NATO cities with them as that will mean his own death.

They spent 50 years trying to kill Castro and failed every time.
