Russian invasion of Ukraine

If I were a Russian athlete and really wanted to make a stand, I’d apply for Ukrainian citizenship and compete under their flag.
I'd imagine they aren't that arsed and just want to compete. I always felt really sorry for athletes back in the cold war days when their countries boycotted Olympics as a political gesture - 4 yrs of training and a significant chunk (often the peak) of a short career written off just so someone in political office can make a political point.

Presumably because Russia would still be paying for their travel and maintenance costs and would be trumping any success as being one for mother Russia. This neutral flag shit is just a way round chucking teams out without actually doing anything.

Rumours that there was conflict in the athletes village - athletes of other countries making it clear Belarus and Russian athletes NOT welcome.

Beautiful Borneo last July.

Lucky git! Stayed in the state of Sarawak for a few weeks when backpacking in the late 90s and loved that place for the scenery and people and wish i'd gone on to Sabah as well but headed south on the Indonesian side to Pontanik instead for a while and flew out to Sulawesi (great coral snorkelling).

Russias credit rating has gone to BB.
Anything below BB+ is usually termed ‘junk’…but there’s a lot of junk level countries in the world these days.

effectively means, it’s (even) harder for Russia to raise external funds, and the ongoing cost of its existing debt rises.
(I think, I’m no financial expert)

I agree to a point. Irrespective of whether they disapprove of their leaders' actions in Ukraine though, the Russians are a proud people and, as such, probably want to compete under their own flag.

should march in unison on the Kremlin and storm it then and take their country and flag back.

Who’s to know he hasn’t gone completely nuts?
Yes who knows. But I suspect if he was completely bonkers we may have seen even more erratic and irrational behaviour than we have seen already. Personally I think that after so long ruling as a total autocratic despot, he's "just" - as if this is not bad enough - lost all sense of normal judgement, and in his mind, he's probably doing a perfectly reasonable thing. With no-one around him prepared to say "WTF do you think you are playing at. Are you mad????"
