Russian invasion of Ukraine

Wise words from someone who suffered the worst of a previous Russian dictatorship.

Hope petrusha is okay.

Wise words indeed, but he also also praised putin for rediscovering what it is to be russian.

He also advocated a new Slavic state of russia, Ukraine, belarus and parts of Kazakhstan that he thought were Russified.

The last fortnight has shown how important some things we take for granted are.

A free press that has the government on the run a lot of the time.

Living in a liberal democracy.

Our relationship with the rest of Europe and how important they are as allies (of course the US too).

NATO.

I never thought about them day to day as I’m not that bothered about politics but I’m bloody grateful for them all now.
That's the point. In a liberal democracy you just take things for granted, it's so normal. When trouble looms we realize how lucky we are.

The BBC news departments have been strong armed into giving the government an easy ride. It’s a national shame how little scrutiny they put the government under.
The left think they’re biased in favour of the government, the right think in favour of the opposition.

those of us who are fair weather it kind of shows them to be impartial.

Weird really, I posted an opinion piece from a Marxist perspective.

I did not endorse the article, i posted it so that other posters could read that different perspectives from the prevailing BM perspective were available. The article was then moderated.

Has BM become like Putin's Russia were censorship is rife and only the official party line is tolerated. I wonder if many of the people who aimed abuse at me see the irony in that.

Anyway you can not beat a good BM pile on, but I am a big boy, I can take abuse, but remember I can also give it out, especially to those who think that by myself posting an article makes me some sort of idiot. Thanks to those who gave me abuse, you proved my point quite beautifully. You are the victims of propaganda in exactly the same way that the Russian people are victims of Putin's propaganda.
My comment wasn't aimed at anything you posted, it was at those that decided to have a 4 page abusive argument which has been removed.

Mariupol.

They’ve been shelling it and a ceasefire was negotiated so civilians could leave through a very narrow route past Russian troops.

The civilians set off as agreed and the shelling started.

I get so fucking angry reading this shit.
Sorry, just after I posted, saw it on the news. Im with you, it's disgusting.

So did I.

A full NATO force in Ukraine now, with nukes off the table on all sides, and the Russians are all dead or in prison extremely quickly.
Oh yeah I agree. Taking the shameful acts and the victims out of it for just a second, militarily this has been a huge embarrassment for Russia.

And to think, we’ve been told for over 2 decades that the enemy we had to fear was the EU.…………..
No, that's OTT. We have been told the EU is an undemocratic centralizing beast that forever tries to garner power over more things. Having worked closely with them for 3 years, the criticism is valid. Question is what to do about it. Brexit was one of many possible answers.

What would happen say it went off in space ? So it can’t actually be shot down

Plenty have been detonated in space during tests in the 50s/60s

First of all, since there is no atmosphere in space, there was no iconic mushroom cloud, nor a blast wave (which is where most of the damage of a nuclear bomb comes from on Earth). Instead, there was an intense outpouring of not only heat and light, but high-intensity radiation in the form of gamma rays and X-rays, with no atmosphere to interrupt their path. Visually, the blast was roughly spherical, and the wave of radiation and light expanded to light up the sky.
On the surface of the planet, vivid auroras of light would be seen for thousands of miles within minutes of the blast, because the charged particles from the blast would immediately begin interacting with Earth’s magnetic field. Imagine the aurora borealis, more commonly known as the Northern Lights, except spread across thousands of kilometers above the Pacific Ocean.

Perhaps even more worrying than the huge amount of radiation being dropped into Earth’s atmosphere is the detonation’s impact on electromagnetic signals in a massive area beneath the blast. Essentially, those highly charged, rapidly moving electrons will create a small and incredibly powerful magnetic field, also called an EMP (electromagnetic pulse). You’ve probably seen this in sci-fi movies many times; an EMP bomb cuts off all electronic power within a given areaIn the case of Starfish Prime, that meant power outages over hundreds of miles in Hawaii, blown out streetlights, disruptions in radar
and navigation systems, and a complete shut down of electronic communication

I’ve seen a few threads today describing that 40 mile column of armour as the one of the biggest military disasters since WW2.

- The front has been taken out so it’s blocked.

- It’s run out of fuel, the batteries are almost certainly flat and the troops have no food

- its parked so tightly that refuelling trucks and food supplies can’t get to the front.

- As soon as anything goes off-road, it is lost to the mud.

- The Ukrainians can pick off any refuelling attempts with the drones.

- The only reason it is still there is because the Ukrainians don’t need to worry about it and can divert focus elsewhere.

- The Russian general was shot by sniper because he was forced/pressured to go to the front line to sort it out which points to it being a major embarrassment/issue for the Russians.

- Very soon the whole column will be abandoned as troops go to get food on foot.
