Peter Doherty

My grandad was a red, born in the 1920s saw all their top players said Peter Doherty was the best player he ever saw.

Did your grandad rate him higher than Pele, puskas, de stefano, cryuff, Maradona etc.

In otherwards did he think doherty was the greatest player of all time.

Bit before my time , but my old elderly neighbours when I was a kid (took me to Wembley in 81 too) always said that, he must have been some player given they’d seen The King too, and they didn’t praise players lightly.

RIP George and Amy, two finer blues you couldn’t wish to meet !

I don't know who is arguing about it, you would need to be 100 to appreciate him. Each generation has their greatest City player ever, and even within generations there is often no consensus.

My paternal grandfather, who was born in 1909 and died in 1989, always said that Doherty was the best outfield player City had in his time watching us and Swift was our best 'keeper. As far as I've been able to ascertain, I think both of these views were reasonably commonly held among those who watched us in the thirties and were alive to see the successful sides of the fifties, sixties and seventies.

One thing my grandad did say was that, in the thirties when Doherty was at his peak, the old timers then used to say that he wasn't as good as the young Meredith. He saw Meredith when the Welshman came back to City at the end of his career when past his best, and thought in that incarnation he wasn't nearly as good as Doherty.

Please don't ask whether Doherty was the best he every saw. I really don't remember what he said about that. I was interested only in his memories of City back then.

My Dad’s Dad was born in 1906 (died in 1974 and I wasn’t born until 1982 so never met him)… he said Doherty is the best player City ever had.

Same as a lot of others on here, grandad started watching city in a about 1907 & dad started going with him in the late 30s early 40s & they both said Peter Doherty was the best player they ever saw, Colin Bell was a very close second though.

Did they think doherty was better than best or finney.

To be honest I dont think Best was ever in the same conversation as Doherty, great player but Best got a lot more attention because of who he played for & weirdly enough I dont think he ever played that well against city?
Cant remember them talking about Finney?
