Its the A560 in the pic mate, I agree its a slope if anything and normally it wouldnt be an issue, but lots of folk(myself included) seemed to struggle with it last time out, Ive stuck it in a few of my long runs lately and had no mither with it, think the general consensus seems to be that as you will have done a lot of pancake flat miles it just takes you out of the comfort zone. Think what also got me was seeing the 3 hour pacer and his tribe happily going the other way!!

The wide open slope with others steaming at pace down the opposite side can always be a mental challenge! You're there plugging away up it knowing it is all just to turn around and then some fresh faced speedsters mock you as they run down.

Knowing it is coming helps. I have done a fair amount of hill work. My challenge will be not to push too hard up it and then blow up for the remaining 10 miles!

@gaz76 the infamous hill on the manchester marathon that I see get talked about everywhere, is it Stamford Road?!

I can see why it might be tricky 16 or so miles in when the rest has been flat...but I know Altrincham and it isn't a very long climb! Can't be more than 400m.
Hi Mate, having done Manchester in October this hill isn't too bad but you have to do it twice as you come back over it too.
Just also bear in mind that near the end (think mile 23) you have to go over Edge Lane (nr Stretford tram stop) and that's a brutal one so near the end & that one was catching a lot of people out last time out.

What training plan are you following?
I usually go on my own but need music as a result. Did genuinely enjoy running without music yesterday though. Was a good crowd out and I was pacing it so it wasn't tough until I tried to up it at the end.
Hi mate

I am following a sub 4 plan, doing around 50 miles a week at the moment.

Thanks mate, I know both well. Particularly Edge Lane as my Nan lived down Hillingdon Road until she died a couple of years ago. That's not much of a climb over the canal/tram stop but I suppose 23 miles in it might feel like one. Always used to walk from hers to the precinct/Arndale as it once was and give the middle finger to the swamp which you can see in the distance. Would get a clip round the ear for that!

You're doing well on the training - I'm on my peak week this week which tops out at 40 miles so as I said before you should be fine for sub 4hrs if you're doing 50 a week!

Scraped a top ten park run finish somewhere outside Cannock on my drive home. Up and down the whole time but some nice views and the weather was decent. Legs felt heavy after the early start, drive and lack of warm up so finished in around 20:18 which was ok as it wasn’t the fastest course.

After my knee injury last month, I restarted "Couch to 5k" from scratch this morning paying particular attention to the warm up & warm down. Completed my circular course in 47 minutes with no knee concerns.
Going to have proper rest days between exercise from now on to allow recovery so doing run today, rest Saturday, swim Sunday, rest Monday, run Tuesday etc.

We’ll done mate. Just out of interest did you end up visiting a physio? A lot of knee injuries are not much to do with the knees at all but weaknesses in other muscles. I do a bit of resistance band training working the glutes, other muscles around the knees and that has really helped.

Worth a one of visit to a physio if you are struggling. I had a few problems with my Achilles and a couple of days of prescribed exercises and I was back to normal.

Cheers bud, just about to hit the buy button, so will take a look at the parkclaw

I do like the Parkclaw but probably more suited to short trail runs like a trail parkrun etc.

Still looking for the right trail shoe for long runs.

I run in saloman ultraglides, which are great for trails and worth a look, but saloman are bringing out three new trail shoes in june I think, one of which has their version of a carbon plate in, so I will probably wait for them to be released

I didn't, just followed advice on the NHS Direct site and on here (ice, elevation, stretching, carrying on with low impact exercise & ibuprofen mainly). All recovered in about 4 weeks & have had no further issues to date.

Great to hear. I was dogged by knee injuries for quite a while and do a bit of resistance training really helped. Just a 6 quid set of bands from decathlon and followed YouTube videos. Strengthening the glutes in particular can prevent a lot of injuries.

They had the ultraglides in the shop but not in my size. I tried on the Hoka Mateta with the rocker plate, which propels you forward, but have had bad experiences with Hoka’s before so never pulled the trigger. Got a long trail run in 3 weeks, so wanted a new pair for that event with a bit more cushioning than the Brooks Cascadia. The missus bought a pair of Salomon Speedcross 5 so it was painful not walking out of the shop with a pair myself.

Today was meant to be my 21 miler in preparation for the marathon lads but after 2 long years I have finally succumbed to the dreaded Covid.

As such, I got out on a secluded route and did 10.6 miles so I’ve at least got something in the legs, will do another 10 miler in the week once I’ve got the all clear then attempt the 21 miler either next weekend or the one after.

Thanks mate, finished in 2.16.33, delighted with that, managed to take your advice and paced it as even as possible, fair few folk saying the wind was bad, tbh I didnt think it was too bad.

Absolutely superb splits mate. I got similar on a half, but not a chance I could have sustained it for another 11k. You must be buzzing for the Marathon now.

Really unlucky that mate. My marathon prep got a bit disjointed at the end so I pushed a bit in the first week of my three week taper. Raced a half and did a 30k, not convinced it helped so don’t chase it in your taper. How far is your longest run, if your there or there abouts I think thats fine.
