Guitar Thread

I've been monitoring the Jazzmasters on eBay carefully - lovely guitars.

Pending the spec of them I would think your lad would prefer the Fenders to the feel of an Epiphone (unless he really just wants a Les Paul)..........
He does love his fenders but keeps goin on about the Epiphone ES335 or Sheraton. Think Noel Gallagher plays it?

There will be a lot of people that think this is heresy but they don't sound like Martin's. They have too much of a cardboard type sound- great for delta blues but not much else. They just don't have a plan B in them.
An 18 or above, whether it's a Dread, 000, OM or whatever is just so versatile- it's never out of its depth.
Don't discount the Road Series either- one of my Martins is a Mexican made solid wood Road Series and in many ways it's as good as a D18 at less money. You just need to check that it is solid wood, most aren't.

The only people that seem to have D15s and love them have other Martins as well to get an alternative. Get a D18 or D28 though and that can easily be your guitar for life.
Get a 000 instead and that's better still- I'd love a 000-42 to add to the collection
What do we think of the DM's?

One manufactured in 1999 that's a bit battered cosmetically (which I don't mind as every second hand guitar has a story) on eBay for £600 (hopefully get it for lower)?

Treated myself to a £100 all in deal (Guitar, case and tuner) 6 months ago. Its a Donner, and it sounds ok. I just didn't wanna spend hundreds and then establish I couldn't be arsed with it.

I'm hooked. Everyday I go to pick it up for 5 minutes and can't put the thing down.

Need to buy an acoustic guitar I can actually enjoy playing (and stays in tune). Got a budget of £400 and think I'll be getting an axe in the Yamaha FG 800 range.

Anyone played anything in the range (or have any alternative recommendations)?

I've also embarked on learning guitar. Few lessons to begin with to learn fundamentals and how stuff knits together. I'm one lesson in, bought a fairly cheap acoustic, practicing my chords. Day 7.

Fingers hurt. Bar chords are impossible.

On the basis you have an amp have a look at an acoustasonic. They are fairly new and the original models were all circa 2k. They just released a more affordable version. Above your budget but a very nice bit of kit.

6 months in and I've only just started attempting barre chords.

Never fuck off anything that is hard, a lesson I should have learnt many years ago. They take a while but the longer you leave it the longer it will take.

Think I'll learn some of the utter basics first, only just picked it up for the first time, I'll give it all a fair crack though, don't worry. Cheers though!

Great good news story that mate - keep it going!!!

I'm currently playing with a Yamaha FG720S and a LL6T (not mine but isn't being played by the owner) - both lovely to play and low maintenance..........

It's a good hurt though right? ;-)

It’s more a strength and fingering position(oooh matron), one tip though when you practice your standard e chord shape also practice it with your middle fourth and pinky finger. That way when you finally get to the dreaded F barre chord you only have to worry about the barre not the speed or placement of the shape.

Good tip, thanks. I'll give it a whirl

I've always played an E that way round (wrong way round) for that exact reason.

The easier transition.............

I can't remember the last time I played one of those. Laminated back and sides so not as good as a D18 but still a decent sitka top. The neck is quite slim, which may suit some. I think it's a little expensive for its condition.

Personally I'd be more tempted by this instead

Those 16s were cracking guitars and although this one has clearly had something of a chequered past, they are allowing offers. Maybe a cheeky lowball could get you a real winner.

Seen that one - much obliged..........

I'm looking at a multi effects pedal but as a technophobe and someone who isn't ofay with these things I'm looking for some advice. My main criteria is

Plenty of different genre sounds(patches?)
Drum beats and looper included.

I basically want a drum machine then lay down the chords have them play whilst I solo with different sounds and effects.

Basically as an example loop the drums and a 12 bar shuffle then play over that.

In effect I want to make my own backing track to play over.
