I do know that people do say “Manny” but I don’t know anyone who uses it and don’t think I’ve heard it said in real life. Doesn’t get used at all in South Manchester that I’ve heard.

“Manny” came out of the Manchester rap scene about 10 years ago. Think there was even a tune called “Manny Man” at some point?

Anyone outside this scene using the word is a **** of the furthest extremes.

From the suburbs:

Heard both terms as a 14 y/o circa 1977.
‘Manny’ was used by those wearing flares/ hippies and had long hair, listened to prog rock etc.

‘Town’ was used by those finding the new upcoming music and trends and actually visited it from the suburbs.

Then ‘Manny’ went out of use ‘cos ‘Town’ was the new lingo.

You could use ‘Town’ to describe the local town (in Shameside) or Manchester and it would be understood where you meant depending on the context.

If you were spending your (paper round own earned) money on new clothes, jeans, t-shirt etc. or buying an LP and going with your mates or going to the match with your dad or sibling ‘Town’ meant Manchester, if it was for something unremarkable like school shoes, uniform or somewhere dragged by your mum ‘Town’ was local.
