He was great, you certainly aren't getting anywhere near that level of performance from Grealish or Sterling. Big hand in the second, scored himself, put in a mammoth shift on top of that, should have scored another but it doesn't mean he was shit.

The dragging of his shots is definitely a thing. It's more to do with his stance than technique in my view though. He doesn't set himself well before striking the ball and so catches it poorly far too many times. the good thing is, it's something he can very easily rectify. It's important to remember his age, he will work on that and get it out of his game soon enough.

Yes first half. Second half one was harder as he along with 90% of the crowd probably thought that Mahrez couldn’t possibly miss from there!
I might need to look at it again tomorrow but thinking back, it was his first touch that made the angle tighter than it needed to be. It took him a little wide, then he still tried to hit it early regardless and dragged it wide. He seems to catch keepers out a lot by hitting them early but I think it was a mistake in that instance.

He only had one defender on him if I remember right, sometimes it's better to take another touch to give yourself a better angle/more to aim at.

Yes his first touch made the chance more difficult

I thought he played well and will give him a 8 out of 10. But I watched the game with a Barca+ManCity fan who watched La Liga a lot. He was not satisfied by Foden's performance because he did not get enough from Carvajal. In his words - Carvajal is a piece of cake to almost every La Liga left wingers and Foden "did not get enough from him". His careless flick pass gifted them a set piece at a good location and it resulted in the penalty.

I am thinking that maybe next week we should go with Sterling (if in form) on left winger with more pace attacking Carvajal and Foden false 9, Jesus right winger. Foden has some success on getting the header from their CBs. Jesus is good at his feet but not his header. Surely we should drop Mahrez after today's performance.

He was pretty good, great in spells, should have been more clinical.

Shame he fucked up just before the free kick that led to the penalty, got a bit carried away and overplayed. He knew it as well in the post game interview.

Happy with his performance today. We cannot expect every chance to be scored by a 21 year old. We'll be in for a surprise if that is the expectation we have of Haaland.

bit of a game of 2 halves for Phil, i thought from kick off to his goal on 53' he had a really great game, but after that he retreated into his own head. He misplaced a number of simple passes and to try and make up for it he tried flicks which weren't coming off. At one point he had a long slow walk with his head down along the touchline and I think he should have been subbed. High pressure on this young man.

I think the chance off the post came too quick and just kind of a reflex, technically difficult. I wouldn't call that a fault.
But I thought he had too many bad contacts and missed passes, that's what makes me think he had a very mixed performance.

In my book the lad is just a little rash in anything he does. That medal has 2 sides:

he is energetic, great workrate, strong drive towards the box and goal, high pressing effort.
On the other side he lacks the calmness that you need for the right timing of pressing and also ball contact when shooting.

In my book he is similar to Kev, and not a Gundo type.
It's good to have both types in a team, calm and rash.
We just have to live with Phil's and Kev's lower accuracy but high impact moments.

If you’re going to leave Mahrez out for Sterling then it should be a straight swap. Not moving the only player we have who can actually hold the ball up and is in great form from upfront. To then basically have 3 players out of position. Sterling can really use his pace if on the right, not having to cut back most of the time from the left. I do think those 3 will all start next week. Wouldn’t even be surprised if it’s in the way you say but I hope not.

I think it started last season. He's got a weird technique of deliberately dragging his shots but I don't know if that's got anything to do with it. I feel like he maybe needs to start varying his approach for one on ones. Maybe it's the only type of finish he feels comfortable with when he's hitting them from the left hand side of the goal.
Yeah agree he always goes for the same finish, which keepers if they study tape will anticipate, which is why he's started to get saved and go for the absolute corner of the corner (which means he shoots wide more often).

Maybe a few lifted finishes or near post shots might means he gets better angles on his preferred finish.

Always shoot across goal, simple

Scored a vital goal at a vital time but his overall performance looked a bit off to me. His usage of the ball seemed a bit overeager and hurried. Percentage passes cut out, hit and hope crosses easily blocked. Hope he gets used slightly more centrally in the future - he uses the ball much more intelligently when he's a bit deeper.

One criticism I have of him recently is that he doesn’t seem to take on players anymore. He always seem to receive the ball and then pass it back to the left back.

when he takes players on he usually beats them, so I’m not sure why he doesn’t more

Because he's rarely isolated one on one against the defender and when he is there's no space for him to run behind once he's around them. He still takes them on when they come out to challenge him but the fullback usually backs off until support arrives.

That’s Peps tactics. As the years have gone by under Pep, we’ve seen our players taking on less defenders as each season goes by.

It's a shame he didn't take Carvahal on a bit more as he is shit. But we know Pep's focus is on ball retention and playing the percentage game. We scored four goals, he got one and should have had another. It was his first touch that was poor and took him too wide to then find the bottom corner. A better first touch and he finishes that I'm sure. A bit frustrating he didn't clear the ball and instead conceded the free kick but we were only in a defensive scramble because of Mahrez' awful pass across the pitch.
