Is somebody going to explain what he did wrong tonight or is it just a barrage of wankers shit posting because he's seemingly the new boo boy? He did nothing wrong tonight. Dias on the other hand was all over the shop all night, walker covering for him constantly first half despite being on one leg, I mentioned how slow he was picking up players at halftime and how that needed tightening up. It didn't, it continued and he's at fault for their first goal and gave away the penalty that puts us out. laporte was largely solid, ridiculous yellow to pick up early but didn't put a foot wrong afterwards yet there's dozens of comments about him not being good enough, what did I miss/forget or is he just getting it in the neck because Dias was shit?

Because Dias thread is closed for some reason
But yeah Dias was terrible over both legs and has been nowhere near as good this season next to Laporte as he was last next to Stones.
Laporte wasn't good or bad vs Madrid

I didn't think he was notably worse than Dias. But yes, the yellow card was stupid.

I think the problem is the partnership is lacking something. Neither of them seems particularly comfortable playing alongside the other, and sometimes it feels almost hostile between them.

Both look better alongside Stones (or Ake). And if we have to choose between Dias and Laporte then there is a lot of bias in Ruben's favour because of him being a captain, and our nostalgia for the Dias/Stones partnership of last season.

He was marking Rodrygo in the box for the Real Madrid second goal and completely switched off, managed to both lose his man completely and miss the ball, Rodrygo gets a free header and we go to extra time.

Sometimes it feels like people on here don't even watch the game.

They're both really good defenders, in a team that generally has a huge proportion of possession. In most matches it doesn't particularly matter that they don't seem to fully trust each other. They don't face a whole lot of attacks, and their quality is enough to handle a big proportion of what comes their way.

It's only when it comes to the crunch, against the top teams, that it becomes an issue.

I didn't like seeing them arguing on the pitch in the middle of the match today. And I can't help but get the impression they each find the other difficult to work with.

Their personal relationship doesn't really matter...until it does.

Ball bounces off Asensio's head which takes it over Laportes?

Could be closer to Rodrygo but bit of a freak/lucky goal.

Why aren't Gundogan and Bernardo back man-marking the runners?

Laporte is waiting in the box for the cross and he runs in unmarked and it found his head perfectly.

I don't know enough about tactics to know where the blame lies completely but it's definitely not ALL at Laporte's door like some are saying.

No, just bad defending. You don't get within arms reach of a forward and then let them run off the back of you.

Totally agree. Don't understand why people always have to look for somebody to blame for everything. Sometimes shit just happens.

Laporte literally has his hands on Rodrygo and then starts ball watching and just drops marking him. It's bad defending.

In a tie we lost 6-5, Laporte cost us 2.5 goals.
 
Both legs were not Laporte's finest hour. Dias did have a rare off day (but to be fair he has just come back from injury)
 
He always seems to be between attackers or jumping under the ball.

He plays like an attacking midfielder trying to find space, It's so strange.

Laporte is perfectly good enough to be our 3rd CB but he's not in our best partnership and Aké will put him under pressure if he keeps making progress.

Agree, problem is if he doesn’t get picked or he feels he is first name on the sheet he moans! There been game for me when Ake should played and Laporte benched but pep don’t like a moaner so he gets every game!
