I love him, but he was fucking awful tonight. Outmuscled, gave the ball away cheaply continually, caught dallying in possession, and shagged countless times for pace by that winger.
89% pass rate.....but "continually gave the ball away" have a think about that ;)
Beaten for pace by a faster player.....can't do anything about that, but pace does'nt make you a good player, how did Usain Bolts football career go.....just asking.

He really struggled against their pacey winger whose name escapes me. Had the beating of him numerous times but you can never question his work rate. Always works hard for the team.

Think we saw last night why Zinch isn't gonna to be that player who makes the role his permanently

Great squad player who you're always confident will do the job required, but he's just not quite good enough for that role that we don't need a better LB, just has those games where the wingers target him with pace and power and while he stands up well to the challenge there are other times he just gets overwhelmed

But love having him as part of the squad

Also wil lthey give him a wage increase FFS...hes on peanuts and his commitment to the club deserves better

It’s amazing how much different a game looks when you’re not watching it through a prism of stress. I rewatched the match this morning and Zinchenko was way better than I had imagined last night. In fact I made it 77 accurate passes (albeit the huge majority pretty straightforward) and only 4 inaccurate passes all evening. There was a little period of sloppiness immediately before and after half time when he was lucky not to concede a penalty, got caught dawdling in possession and set up a counterattack, and then gave away a silly free kick in a dangerous position and copped for a yellow into the bargain, but apart from that he was actually pretty solid throughout. I can only assume that confirmation bias kicked in after that little poor spell and coloured my judgment for the rest of the evening! My apologies!

Sure he’s a good lad etc etc

However if you were the opposition manager looking to exploit any potential weakness in this very good side you would target Zinchenko….

so for me we need to look to improve that position.

you might say that position is Cancelo’s

but I still feel he could be improved upon as a left sided defender.

Who it should be is another question altogether - but I just feel it’s our weakest position as a team

He can only be as good as he is, in a position that was not originally his own (and still isn't when he plays for his country). He struggled against a player who quickly cottoned on to the fact that he had the beating of him for pace, but I thought he managed quite well.
His creative play in putting the ball forward was, as ever, good. That's often overlooked.

Not that we may have a choice, but if we did I’d play him over Cancelo for the last two games.
Need a strong character with a good footballing brain, and I think I trust him to protect a makeshift back line.

They had a whippet on his side but I thought he did ok defending - it's not as if they were creating chance after chance. Because he was beaten for pace a couple of times it seems some overlook his vital role in two of our goals - he out jumped said whippet to set up the move for the opening goal and then provided a delicious pass looped to Kev for the second. He has been great of late and nice that Pep trusts him.

I don't think some on here appreciate just how good and reliable a player Zincheko is, and a few keep mentioning he gets turned inside out and skinned for pace sometimes, which does happen. But he always tries his best and never goes hiding. He retains the ball and links up play well, and uses the ball intelligently with good passing ability.

It seemed a couple of seasons back Wolves were interested in signing Alexander and it's reputed he pleaded with Pep to stay, and I'm really glad he did. He is a model pro who seems happy enough to sit on the bench one week and play the next. Not many 'squad' players out there who would come in and be as patient and effective a player as Zinco, and such a down to earth and likable guy too.

Wolves clearly planned to as switch the ball to his flank and have that Chiquinho 1v1 against him. He struggled defensively, but thought his use of the ball was excellent as it often is.
Banana peel was just too fast for him. He was very good in possession and his movement and positioning was excellent.

But 1 v 1, the mix of being faster, taller, more athletic and somewhat of a good dribbler made BP a serious problem for Zee.

Hats off to Banana peel. But Zee was good overall.
