No, I mean I'm not going to be a simpleton and judge a player off their YouTube highlights reel. You could make a compilation like that for dozens, and I mean dozens, of Prem players. Xhaka, Partey, Hojbjerg, Douglas Luiz, Keita, Allan, Fred, I could go on and on. Are any those players I've just listed good enough on a technical level for us?

He came on last night and put in an average cameo. Started brilliantly by playing a great ball over the top but then proceeded to give it away carelessly. His positioning seemed clumsy. His touches and movement seem static, compared to Rice who had been drifting and dribbling past players with ease (incidentally something our Rodders is capable of). By the end of the match he'd degraded into mediocrity; maybe a little unfair because by that point he was surrounded by mediocrity, but the point stands.

Pep isn't going double pivot next season. Haaland is a guaranteed starter, that would leave three to select from Grealish, Foden, De Bruyne, Gundo, Alvarez, Mahrez, Bernie; and that's assuming Sterling and Jesus leave! We're not restricting ourselves like that to accommodate Kalvin Phillips. That will mean he'll be a squad player, fair enough. But I think we can do a lot better for the prices we're willing to hit; in my opinion a more versatile, top class/potentially world class midfielder who can play multiple positions.

I'll back the club and I'll get behind the player, I've nothing against him. But as of right now, especially for £60mil, I don't think he's anywhere near good enough for us. No amount of YouTube footage is going to sway me. He can help change my mind if and when he pulls on our shirt.
Against the top teams eg Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea and in some CL games of course Pep would play a double pivot. The double pivot will provide the extra protection our defence may require.

by a huge margin the "no dissenting opinions allowed" crew here is so much more annoying than the occasional "i don't rate this player" posters. every time someone might not rate the player the same way, 10 people just jump on their throat, foaming at the mouth assuming they are posting in bad faith/have no clue what they're talking about/wrong. pointless.

Its very clear that many people on this thread are basing their contributions on a preconceived idea of his ability rather than having watched him play for a sustained period.

Regarding a fee.....has one actually been stated as fact?
That's a fair enough point mate. And maybe my stance will soften once I've seen him play for us consistently. But having watched him sporadically for two seasons I've seen nothing special in his play, that's not preconceived notions, it's what I'm witnessing on the pitch.

If he signs absolutely no way he will be a back up. It just doesn't work that way. Phillips will be part of the rotation system along with all the other midfielders. Pep's been here 6 years and people still don't understand how he works

It's the same thing.

Phillips will be there for when Rodri needs a rest, is injured, is out of form or simply when we play lesser opposition.

Unless you seriously think that Kalvin Phillips will be just as likely as Rodri to start the big games or that he'll end up with the same amount of appearances, I think you're splitting hairs.

Then we have watched different games,as i see him as exactly the type of player we need.He is comfortable in possession, has an eye for a pass and loves to get stuck in.

Hopefully,im sure youll agree.....i am right.

An entirely reasonable post.

It isn’t the don’t rate the player opinion, or ‘I don’t see it ‘opinions that bother. It’s he’s championship level or he gives the ball away or the he’s just a destroyer nonsense.Or even buy him for 35 mill but not 45 mill,or he’s a fit for £40 mill but not £50 mill as if that changes his ability and suitibility.
Those things completely ignore the facts of who our manager is and what he expects from a player the fact that he thinks a player can do a job for us automatically means all those things cannot be true.
If you want post I think player X or Y would be a better option fine thats an opinion to discuss. If you want to post ‘I don’t see that we need him’ fine too. It could be a transfer that doesn’t work out thats always possible too
Posting he’s crap and hasn’t the ability to play for us and Pep and Txiki, and any of our recruitment team can’t see, it‘s so obvious but I can, it’s deluded, and ignores our recent recruitment record.
