No, I mean I'm not going to be a simpleton and judge a player off their YouTube highlights reel. You could make a compilation like that for dozens, and I mean dozens, of Prem players. Xhaka, Partey, Hojbjerg, Douglas Luiz, Keita, Allan, Fred, I could go on and on. Are any those players I've just listed good enough on a technical level for us?

He came on last night and put in an average cameo. Started brilliantly by playing a great ball over the top but then proceeded to give it away carelessly. His positioning seemed clumsy. His touches and movement seem static, compared to Rice who had been drifting and dribbling past players with ease (incidentally something our Rodders is capable of). By the end of the match he'd degraded into mediocrity; maybe a little unfair because by that point he was surrounded by mediocrity, but the point stands.

Pep isn't going double pivot next season. Haaland is a guaranteed starter, that would leave three to select from Grealish, Foden, De Bruyne, Gundo, Alvarez, Mahrez, Bernie; and that's assuming Sterling and Jesus leave! We're not restricting ourselves like that to accommodate Kalvin Phillips. That will mean he'll be a squad player, fair enough. But I think we can do a lot better for the prices we're willing to hit; in my opinion a more versatile, top class/potentially world class midfielder who can play multiple positions.

I'll back the club and I'll get behind the player, I've nothing against him. But as of right now, especially for £60mil, I don't think he's anywhere near good enough for us. No amount of YouTube footage is going to sway me. He can help change my mind if and when he pulls on our shirt.
I think that’s a fair post, and it’ll be interesting which way it goes with him if he comes in. I’d say the likelihood is he’d be a success, just based on our transfer record. but I agree on the fee. I know many don’t think that’s a topic for discussion, but it’s at least £15m too high for me, even in today’s market.

It isn’t the don’t rate the player opinion, or ‘I don’t see it ‘opinions that bother. It’s he’s championship level or he gives the ball away or the he’s just a destroyer nonsense.Or even buy him for 35 mill but not 45 mill,or he’s a fit for £40 mill but not £50 mill as if that changes his ability and suitibility.
Those things completely ignore the facts of who our manager is and what he expects from a player the fact that he thinks a player can do a job for us automatically means all those things cannot be true.
If you want post I think player X or Y would be a better option fine thats an opinion to discuss. If you want to post ‘I don’t see that we need him’ fine too. It could be a transfer that doesn’t work out thats always possible too
Posting he’s crap and hasn’t the ability to play for us and Pep and Txiki, and any of our recruitment team can’t see, it‘s so obvious but I can, it’s deluded, and ignores our recent recruitment record.
all i've seen in this thread so far is people jumping at your throat when others are questioning his ability, not rating him, and not rating the price newspaper are alleging we're gonna have to pay to get him. none of these are crazy things to suggest. none of this is calling pep/txiki/omar/anyone else incompetent, it's literally fans expressing opinions.

spending 100m on grealish was a mistake given how far his performances were from the price and people are worried the same is going to repeat with phillips. i get it, you hate reading criticism. but stop jumping at people who have the guts to call it like it is.

Have the guts, really you think posting on the internet takes guts. They aren’t calling it like it is they are calling it like they think it is, I’d guess they have about a 1% chance of being right, because they are betting their amateur football knowledge against Pep fucking Gaurdiola and all the professional analysts the the club employ.
So say you can’t see it fair enough say you prefer others fair enough. Don’t say you can see what the those employed by the club can’t see, you can’t, you don’t have a fraction of the information they have.

As a general rule most of the “characters” on here just become parodies of themselves over time.
Click on his name and go back the maximum 25 pages, which takes you back about 18 months. It’s genuinely hilarious. Pep should be sacked, Dias was a bad signing, Laporte is rubbish, we will do well to finish in the top four, we are a terribly run club, we won’t win anything.

Every single one of those appear within a minute or two of browsing. But not only is everything totally wrong, there is NOTHING correct. What is it about football that the people who know literally nothing about it don’t realise it? I don’t go posting on a physics forum or a ten pin bowling forum. And even if I did and got proven wrong about everything I’d stop pretty quick in embarrassment.

"calling it like they think it is" and how is that different from what you're doing? give me a break. so condescending and rude. so arrogant
I haven’t said what I think, of the player I’ve said the club and those employed are far better placed and equipped than me or anyone else to decide whether a player is good enough for our team and how much they can afford. What I think is results and recent history says I’m right to trust the club. If it turns out to be one of those that doesn’t work out so be it , they have the credit in the bank for a couple of those.

"calling it like they think it is" and how is that different from what you're doing? give me a break. so condescending and rude. so arrogant. the "no dissenting opinions crew" here is some of the most self centered group i've ever spoken to you're so sure of your own correctness yet you project the same criticism to anyone who dares to speak against you. have a day off
I really think you’re pushing this too far. It’s a City forum, so most are going to be loyal to the club, even if they may have doubts. They’re hardly overtly aggressive about it. Condescending and rude? They’re football fans. Many come on here because dissenting opinions are tolerated.

You've twisted his reply.
That's not what he was implying.

God it’s getting pathetic on here. We have known Dinho’s legs had gone and his place in the squad would need replacing for over a year. We knew he’d likely leave this summer. We will have had our scouts out to every corner looking at players. We will have had detailed reports, numerous games watched, Pep’s opinion on who he likes and what he wants, player availability and prices discussed, checking whether the player would be ok with a squad role initially knowing Rodri is first choice.

All of that work over months and months and if after all of that they have decided on Phillips and Pep has given his approval then that is who will try and get.

To call it “lazy recruitment” is a joke frankly. The hard work will have been put in to find the right player. If you don’t like it then fine come on here and stomp your feet to your hearts content.

But stop acting like the club is run by idiots who just pick names out of a hat and don’t do any due diligence on transfers.

I've never really understood this aspect of the forum, you get a bunch a City fans together in the pub to discuss Kalvin Phillips and you'll get a mixture of opinions, he's hardly a universally popular addition.

He is a click bait poster

I'm intrigued by this thread. I believe our interest in the lad is real and I'd be amazed if Pep were interested in someone as "bang average" as some portray him. Personally, though, I have seen so little of him that I have no right to an opinion. I am in the position of all those who voted 6 Liverpool players into the PLTOTY - while they are playing too much for their own team to watch anyone else they take their opinions from a scouse obsessed media, I watch City and see very little of other teams and players. Phillips has been injured much of this season and missed the game at the Etihad in Dec. I'm not going to judge him on one game against us in April. I haven't watched the nations league, so I shall enjoy my perch on the fence and see how events unfold, all the while trusting to the judgement of the club.

Get over yourself mate.

This is a football forum, it’s not the debating chamber of the UN or something. Chucking out an opinion in on anonymous forum doesn’t take guts - literally anyone can do it. It doesn’t make you some bold, brave crusader for what’s right in the world.

You clearly don’t welcome people disagreeing with you, yet you expect others to be open to you disagreeing with them. The irony is you’re actually coming across as everything you criticise others for.

I’m sure you don’t want my advice, but here it is anyway. If you’re going to post on here, you need to accept some people will welcome your take - and others will think it’s a load of bollocks. In both cases, they’ll tell you that straight - so you need to develop a thicker skin. Fuck it - you don’t know any of the people on here outside of the forum, so who cares what they think of you. If you have an opinion, state it - and have the confidence in your perspective. Don’t be so brittle, complaining about people’s responses all the time.

If you can’t find that balance, then discussion forums may not be for you. Maybe try writing a blog instead, and close it to comments. That way you can give your take without anyone calling you out on it.

I happen to agree with your position on Phillips - I’m not convinced he’s of the required quality for our midfield, and he’s unlikely to be cheap - so I think we can do a lot better for the money we’re going to end up paying.

Grealish is a different player though, and a red herring in this context. It’s like saying Bernardo is homesick so we shouldn’t have signed Dias. Every person is different.

It does seem the club is prioritising PL experienced players for the position though - which I do get. Although given the limited talent pool for that position, I’d rather we looked elsewhere.

Hahahha people take forums to seriously. I love coming on reading some of the bullshit and me posting some also..
I love looking back at some of the things I have written in the past and find myself shaking my head in disbelief, but that’s ok, because despite what some on here believe (about themselves) I’ve not seen a single poster yet, who gets everything right all of the time.
