No idea if we sign Phillips,
but we need a DM as a rotation for Rodri vs lesser opponents - but also if Rodri is unavailable vs top oppos! He has to accept the bench quite often.

A top DM won't sign to battle for starts vs Rodri.
We need an experienced DM for a quite complex position in the middle of the park, kids are simply too risky.

We have to pay the prize for the quality we need for such a key position and the player has to accept probably less minutes to be part of a title winning squad. Similar to Aké's signing.

Being honest first season we came up Phillips looked quality and a player I’d be gutted to sell at any price. This last season he’s been average at best when he’s played but our form still drops off a cliff when he’s missing. I think if Bielsa can make him look good Pep certainly can.

So Leeds fans don’t want to lose him and City fans don’t want to buy him.
I seriously do L4EV.
I had the same argument "discussion" a couple of years ago on this very forum over the signing of Ake.
He started off slowly but over the next few months he showed why Pep and our Management decided it was the right decision.
Too many City fans had already made up their mind, that due to him coming from an "unfashionable club" (Bournemouth) that he wasn`t good enough.
Fast forward 2 years and we have the same scenario (and please I`m not knocking Leeds but unfortunately on this forum too many City fans do) but I honestly believe that he can/will become a wonderful DF for us and I accept Peps and Txikis understanding of what we need and the type of player we need to replace our wonderful Ferno.

True, we laugh at the rags for buying players for who they are, without much thought for where they fit. Christ though, £60m for a squad player, but as you say, essential for those moments we need one. We’ve been lucky with Rodri, injury wise.

Edit: that’s if it is £60m.

A glowing recommendation. Get that chequebook out Txiki.

I thought we were going for him as cover for Rodri and/or maybe as a 2 with Rodri, while playing with more attacking full backs, just to sit in front of the CBs. Possibly even with Rodri getting further forward, we’ve seen the damage he can do. Others have said he has a wide passing range, but I seriously doubt we’re going for him for his creativity. Either way, if it’s more than the £35m that was first mooted, for the relegation clause, the price is too high imo.
Again, maybe so. But the rumours are that the club have pushed hard for him, including Pep. Suggesting it's simply as cover for Rodri or possible support might be true, but it feels a bit crude.

He's been watched multiple times by Pep and his coaching team. Multiple times by scouts and probably data analysts too. A club of City's status probably has the pick of almost any midfielder. There's got to be a more legitimate reason related to Phillips' playing ability that would make the club so keen, surely?

I wouldn't judge him based on playing for Waistcoat.

I haven't seen enough of him to know if he is the right player but will trust the people here if they decide they want to try and sign him.

I do sense Phillips gets a hard time because he plays for Leeds so he must be shit etc.

We will still go after him, like do our scouting team and DOF really give a f about someguy post in online forum?

Just one match overeaction like usual, feels like MOTD thread tbh.
Let's not act like there wasn't concern about him and his ability LONGGGG before this England game

Mate, I could join this current squad and end up winning a load of trophies.

I don't think there's anyone out there who is going to bet £100 on Kalvin Phillips derailing what has been built here.
100% correct. Most successful teams over the years have had their own versions of Akes, or Phillips. There is nothing wrong with having these types of players in the squad, playing 10-15 games a season. It’s just that most teams didn’t/don’t pay a combined £100m for them.

Agree its a lot of money (more than Haalands cost?) but ppl will be crying if we dont replwce Fernadinho and lose Rodri at some point
