I’m old enough to remember only one substitute per team, though not that old that I can recall the time, when none was allowed.

In the King’s debut for Bury, I believe.I can. In those days an injured player would continue on the pitch, unless it was so serious he couldn't even walk. Usually put out on the left wing, or sometimes centre forward for some strange reason. In fact Harry Dowd famously had to do that once for City..........and scored. :-)
