They also do it at St Pancras when getting the Eurostar. Saves time at the other end. If everyone had to queue to get off a ferry it would cause even bigger problems.

passport is stamped on the way out and stamped on the way back to make sure you do not exceed the 90/180 days limit.

They do have to queue.
Everyone’s passport is checked at the French port when you disembark.
Took me ages to get out of the St Malo passport check.

watching the news it seems that they were short of half a dozen people to check the passports due to people calling in sick with Covid.

Fact is that there has been mass queuing on the motorway and around the port of Dover all year with HGV's backed up in Operation Stack - what hasn't helped is the start of the summer hols getaway which just adds to the mess. What is unforgivable is the way the press have turned a blind eye to whats been happening to comply with the Govt's "lets just ignore Brexit" programme just as they are doing with Operation "lets ignore Covid" too

I’ve just seen Simon Calder, travel expert, talking about the need for the British passport to be checked and stamped when going in and out of the Schengen countries. It seems the UK government insisted on this!
