Crystal Palace (H) | Post Match Thread

Shite first half and incredible second. Haaland brilliant, Bernie brilliant, Alvarez needs to start games, Mahrez needs benching especially with Bernie playing on the right next to him and both cutting inside. Gomes looks decent.

Would be nice to get the first half right a bit more often to save on the old nerves!
As ever with a game where a team goes two behind there's a mixed bag of performances. Personally couldn't wait for Mahrez to be substituted. I'm not hating on him but when he's coasting like he was yesterday it's as frustrating as fuck.
Kev was awful yesterday but he has the ability to change games at any point. His effort is also unquestionable.

Just watching MOTD on the iPlayer. Loving Mowbray's comments re mentality monsters, "it's just pass pass pass and score", "Manchester has a machine in it's midst", "you wouldn't believe what happens here so regularly if you didn't see it yourself". He's one of the better commentators out there, in my opinion. Also fair play to Jenas for sticking up for Ederson when he was "fouled".

Another match that has you scratching your head like the Villa game. At half time there looked no way back for us but an absolutely magnificent Bernardo dragged us back into it by example. A whirling all action dervish, snarling and putting in superhuman effort he simply refused to accept defeat. Haaland will grab all the headlines but Bernardo led by example.

The first half was awful. What on earth has happened to our defence?? Absolutely shocking and Ederson has turned into Margetson. For those not of a certain age let me tell you it's not a compliment. Palace attacks may have been rare but they scored twice and looked likely to score every single time they got anywhere near our box. I'm not sure if it's tactics or a collective loss of form but it needs addressing urgently. Absolutely nothing clicked in the first half.

The second half, what a contrast. We ran Palace dizzy and could have scored more. Once Haaland and the team become even more used to playing together it could be frightening for our opponents. An out and out forward who looks almost ordinary at times then bangs in a hat trick. I'll take that. Alvarez also looks like he could be a great addition. Fast and terrier like.

After the game, on advice from here, I decided to wander to have a look at that new bar in the South stand. Very impressive. Loads of staff and tills, all pleasant and friendly and a DJ playing a great set. I enjoyed a very pleasant hour in there before heading home once the crush had eased. Well done metrolink for once again running direct trams to and from Altrincham. Can we please continue this?

On the subject of trams I have to write this not so pleasant bit. I do so in the hope the two cretins I'm talking about read it and take a long hard look at their behaviour. I got on the Altrincham tram at 18:00 from the stadium. Two pissed up young lads spent the whole journey singing about Munich, scousers being crushed at Hillsborough and shouting vile sexist and homophobic comments all littered with foul language in front of women and kids. The tram driver was a great bloke, talking over the intercom and having a laugh. For some reason they kept on shouting he was a paedo. That word was used a lot, it seems to be a favourite insult for the brain dead these days. Blues or not if somebody would have sparked the two of them out I'd have celebrated along with the whole tram. Grow up lads!
Trams only running directly to the Etihad while work is done on the Eccles line. The people running Metrolink will not see the benefit and go back to the usual schedules when the work is completed.

As for those Morons, even though I am 76 years old I would have walked up to them and had some choice words to say. Disgusting behaviour .

Did you get caught up with the cricket supporters leaving OT after the test finished? Our tram was actually at the station next to the ground when a huge roar went up which I presume was the last wicket.

Re foul on Cancelo before the corner for their second goal:

Did you think it was a red card? If not, then VAR can't look at it.

I wasn't sure at the game but it looked like a foul and at least a yellow on the highlights.

Yeah I did, he threw his forearm/elbow into Cancelo's face so I think it was a red card offence

As everyone has said, the first half was dire. Literally every player was poor.

I thought the elbow on Cancelo was a foul, no question. His arm was well up, he wasn't shielding the ball but Cancelo made such a meal of it. I think if he'd had just gone down, he might of got it instead of rolling around. Strange how VAR never seems to look at these incidents.

As for the disallowed goal, it was a foul but I was more annoyed with Ederson for putting the ball there in the first place. He has games where he just doesn't concentrate and he's clearly not aware of what is around him.

Second half was spectacular. Bernardo dragged the team into it but once Gundogan and Alvarez came on the game changed. Both were superb. Bernardo showed everyone how to dribble past a player, Haaland looks absolutely lethal doesn't he? How anyone can talk of getting Jesus back etc is beyond me.

I do think Gundogan is our most underrated player. His has this ability to find space and pick how passes, similar to David Silva but his goal threat is much higher.

The pass from Gundogan into Halland was amazing wasn't it? When Gundogan got the ball, you could see Haaland asking for it and it's almost like Gundogan thought "no point passing it there, he won't take it.... The pass and control were world class, Haaland took the ball, held off their defender like he was a child and the keeper didn't even move. Absolutely world class.

Once we've tightened up the defence, the PL is ours. Haaland will prove to probably be the best purchase we've made since The Sheikh took over.

COME ON CITY!!!

Thought we looked a lot better when Cancelo went off. He wasn’t really getting involved much offensively or defensively and most of his passes were off the cuff balls to Foden he had to try and make something of.

I don’t get Cancelo. He’s so uneven. One week he is handsdown the best right back in the world. Another week he can be so absolute shit. It’s almost fascinating.

Talk about a game of two halves .
The first was slow slow ponderous passing . Only when Bernie injected some pace and ran at them did we break through.
Our defensive unit as a whole looks weak .
Looked like we went 3 at the back when Cancelo went off, which really helped tbh. Not saying we need it more often but the change worked yesterday.

Great game of football between two teams who played really well on the day with one team manged by Pep who wanted to splay football and the other team managed by a knobhead who had his team time wasting, diving, and feigning inuury at every opportunity yet we came through and won the game.

Fuck your shit Vieira you dickhead. Football won today!

Haaland was fantastic but Bernardo and Johnny Boulders were absolutely superb!

Great game, great day; I loved it!
Really??? I am sure he would love it if you told him to his face. Moronic comment and totally unnecessary

They weren't running direct all day as I was in Altrincham at 10:00 and they were just going to Piccadilly so it looks like they run there for match traffic which is fine. Nobody expects them to run to the Etihad on non match days but if they do so; n matchdays it will be great.

Mate the days pricks like that listen to anybody without resorting to violence are long gone, so it's a fight or worse stabbed if you intervene. Trust me anybody who said a word to them it would have erupted into violence, they were pissed/coked out of their tiny brains. The tram was packed so if you had a seat you stayed sat down and would have had to fight through people to get to them. Loads were commenting on them but just wanted to get home.

Yes it was packed at OT with them.

Paddy is not the only manager who instructs his team to run down the clock from the first kick. Ten or fifteen teams last season demonstrated that it was their major tactical manoeuvre after fielding a team of cross country runners who could maintain some shape using a four man defensive midfield and a back five. I just cannot understand what refs are upto with completely ignoring the timewasting. Fifty thousand inside the stadium knew what that goalie was about. Why are refs so bloody keen on blowing for a foul when the 'foul' of timewasting appears not to register on any odd brain cell they have.

It helped because the 3 at the back was 1 more than we had in the first half! We've always looked vulnerable to the basic ball over the top, but with just 2 centre halves covering the full pitch, it doesn't even need to be a good ball.

Sitting in the family stand, roughly in live with the 18 yd line on our LHS for the first half, there was never anyone outside me. Dias was first, Cancelo in front of him and Foden was then in front of him. None of them had an angled ball out and the only width to the pitch was from Mahrez staying wide.

I'm not sure if that was intentional or some players not getting it, but we were so narrow and the fullbacks couldn't/wouldn't overlap, so it was fairly easy for Palace to defend against but also gave them easy out balls, as there was so much space.

Second half, Cancelo at least got wide and beyond Foden before he was taken off. Bernardo charged the game though, so much more direct than Mahrez had been.
