Queen Elizabeth II

The whole country will observe a period of official mourning. All a bit ridiculous imo.
I've got to agree - I suspect there will be millions of people who want to pay their respects, and it's sad when anyone dies - but I don't think most people will really want everything cancelled, including the football, for days on end.

All these rules about 12 days of mourning are based on the world we lived in seventy years ago, when the Royal Family were considered not far off being blessed by "God".

It's a major event, there should be a huge response, and people should be able to grieve, but it feels like we've grown up in the last seventy years, and I don't think the country grinding to a halt is appropriate anymore.

I've nothing against the Royal Family, nothing whatsoever. In fact, on balance, I probably prefer that we've got them rather than don't.

It's just the expectation that we should all be distraught at HM's eventual passing that annoys me.
Nobody expects you to be distraught , nobody

She is head of the church and comander in chief ,this is history whether you like it or not

this is a very good shout football and sports will shut down and mourning will be about 2 weeks, this could have a very big impact on football and European football even the world cup, 2 weeks of mourning would be 4 games off and need rearranging
Would UEFA allow this? Can't see them cancelling CL games

Yes I think she has already passed away and they are preparing the nation rather than one big shock announcement

yep

the BBC are watering down the fact it could be over, But their faces speak 1000 words

yep

i think she has passed and just getting all the family to her side and say their final farewells, i think the media also know and will be major breaking news about 10pm tonigh
Thought this the last hour or so. I think she’s passed and this is protocol. Announcement in coming hours if that’s the case.

But why the need for others to tell people they won't be upset?

If my dad died and I posted it on here, I wouldn't expect you to be upset, but would still expect respect or sympathy.

This woman has impacted your life, even if you don't realise it.

Might have been a charity, might have been a special moment with your family over Xmas dinner, in school, absolutely anything.

She has been an ever-present to any person living in this country for the last eight decades.

Remarkable.

I haven't told anyone they can't be upset have I? If that's how they feel then fine. I will be impacted by her death of course, she's been Monarch all my life, but I won't be distraught at her passing and I object to be told by all & sundry that is the way I should feel

I’m Irish mate. I wouldn’t call myself staunchly anything tbh when it comes to politics.
I don’t really understand royalty in this day and age…..
But mate, she is your head of state and has been for 70 years.

I would put on hold any personal criticisms of the system of royalty and peerage etc. for another day.

As your head of state she was well respected throughout the world including, dare I say it, here in Ireland, where she was very well received when she made her official visit a number of years back.

There will be a lot of pomp and ceremony when she sadly does pass. It’s what you Brits do. There will be huge expense too I’m sure, for those that want to gripe further, but really….
This is an end of an era and the future of Britain and the system of monarchy will likely never be the same again.

Her passing will be felt throughout the world, no matter what your politics are.

The day she shook hands with Martin McGuiness and joked with him, despite all, tells you what an incredible person she has been.

Although I agree with you, I read earlier that these plans are reviewed and updated upto 3 times a year. 12 days of complete shut down does seem way ott in this day & age though.

I think all sport will be cancelled until Monday, she will May in state for a week or so for people to pay respects then funeral in a few weeks.

You still here…busy,busy,busy!

Bit of a break as I have to go and pick up my 9 year old Niece from school. She's living with us now as my Sister is too poorly to look after her so we've taken on the responsibility of bringing her up until she's 18.

I'll crack on with some more work when I get back don't worry :)

The ECB have confirmed there’s no requirement for them to stop cricket. It’s up to the individual sports governing bodies.

You said you wouldn't be upset?

I was simply asking why anyone needs to share such.

You don't need to be distraught, but everyone can show absolute respect.

There will be 20 million people on the streets when the day comes.
