80 | Cole Palmer - 2022/23 Performances

I absolutely disagree. It's entirely positional IMO. Looks absolutely lost on the left. Mahrez would be the same on the left, even at his peak, or Grealish on the right. It's alien to them.
I’m not saying you are wrong but he is getting in the team out wide left, so he either performs out there, or he doesn’t. Pep isn’t all of a sudden going to change to give Palmer a position elsewhere, so it’s on Cole to show what he can do. It might not be ideal for him, but he’s a kid getting minutes in the best team in the world, under the best manager in history. Make the most of it, or don’t. Fans have spent the past couple of seasons saying Foden would be better at 8, it’s not stopped him doing the business wide left.

He was far to good for academy football last season and now Peps trying to give him some minutes for us when we’ve got an healthy lead. It doesn’t help that Peps playing him on the left, he needs to either be on the right or in the middle. We should have sold Mahrez in the summer and properly promoted Palmer by giving him Mahrez spot on the right.
Yeah, Mahrez should have been sold four seasons ago when he missed that life-changing penalty at Anfield. He should have been sold three seasons ago to allow Sterling to play on the right and Sane on the left. He should have been sold two seasons ago to give space to Foden in the middle by pushing Silva to the right. He should have been sold last year to allow Torres and later Jesus and Palmer to play on the right side. Last summer, he should have been sold to allow Grealish to play on the left and Foden or Palmer on the right. Yet, Mahrez is still here and has been extended to 2025 or 2026. What is Pep thinking?

;) ;)

Not sure that's fair. I want Cole to succeed as much as anyone (and think he will) but Mahrez has been one of our best players for the better part of the past 3 years. It's not fair to advocate selling him in favor of an undoubtedly talented yet unproven youngster, whos best case scenario is likely reaching Mahrez's level.

Obviously a great talent but nowhere near ready for a starting place and unfortunately when you are part of this City squad you have to be patient and accept you will likely play out of position and have minimal minutes as a youngster coming through.

I’m pretty sure there are one or two on here who would rather we play 7/8 kids and finish up winning fuck all as long as they got to see the yoof in action.

Needs to get over himself a bit. I like him and I think he's got it, but erling wasn't happy today, and rightly so. Get the ball in early doors Cole. You're with the big boys now

In a team as good as ours you take the minutes in any position you can get. Foden barely ever played on the left during his youth, he mainly played on the right or through the middle. But the only way he could get minutes in the first team was to play there and he took that chance and is now a key player for us.

Palmer is now in the same situation and he needs to make it count. Suggesting we need to sell a senior player to accommodate a youth player who has proven nothing so far is just silly.

Agree. It’s ridiculous keep playing him on the left.

He’s a Mahrez type player. When have you ever seen Mahrez on the left? It’s not difficult to put the kid on the right where he might make a case for getting in the team like he was doing in January before his injury. He keeps putting him on with Mahrez thought so he’s in a position he’ll never do much in.

We said that about Foden and pep must think he is good enough to put him on that side, Pep must believe it makes a player more rounded if he can improve in a position you ain’t used to! Also it tells you everything about Mahres and Grealish who gets the luxury of never changing sides playing in there preferred position even with all there years of experience..

Very different players though and Foden did what rarely happens at their ages and developed a burst of pace that Palmer doesn’t have. Palmer is all about creating half a yard and great finishing when he cuts in and that’s impossible for him from the left.

Tells us that those 2 can’t play on the opposite flank and that’s the case with Palmer if you want to see the best of him.

If you remember Foden first few games there we were saying the same! Maybe it will take palmer longer to understand that position but I believe and also most importantly Pep believes he can play there and improve, that must be a great confidence boost to the lad seeing pep mustn’t believe Mahres and Grealish can switch sides…

It’s how much faith I’ve got in Palmer, he’s pretty much a Mahrez regen. Mahrez has been piss poor for ages now, back end of last season he was shit. The goal he scored at the Bernabeu disguised some shite performances. I don’t think it’s silly to suggest Palmer could have replaced Mahrez this season.

Yeah,i remember thinking that with Foden too. No doubt that sprint coach helped him as originally he wouldn’t have been quick enough to go on the outside of fullbacks from the left.

Liked to see palmer in that position for a full game and longer than the few minutes he is getting..

I'm hoping he'll get some starts this season if only in cup games, I really like the look of him, immense talent. I bet Dortmund have been sniffing around :(

Off after 70m - 2nd half has been all Italy. Palmer was moved front and center for his last 5 mins, challenged the keeper with a sudden long-range shot after the move. Still 2-0 Eng.
