Sure some of the assists that have and haven't been given to players have been suspect over the years

They took an assist off him for his cross to Sterling at the Emirates because it took a slight deflection. Was a really strange decision because surely then you’d have to give every goal scored with a slight deflection as an own goal?

I had a bet with a mate years ago about how many assists Charlie Adam would get for Liverpool (I said he wouldn't get many), so was obviously watching him closely

One of the assists he got was when he crossed it into the box, a defender blocked the cross and the ball broke to the edge of the area, where a Liverpool player hit it first time and scored. And Charlie Adam was given the assist! Yet we see minor deflections not given now. I'm sure there have been deflections given as assists in recent times, but that one for kevs, and foden recent assist for haaland, weren't given

Anyway, let's hope Kev smashes the record regardless this season

It's the stupid OPTA definition where deflections don't count.
Some of the sites use different data providers and they do count for slight deflections, own goals off a cross where the pass/cross has created the panic , and when a player is fouled for a penalty it counts as an assist if the penalty is scored. TransferMrkt site was like that.
 
If he was starting on the bench as some posters keep saying, we definitely wouldn't be scoring after 55 seconds v Wolves.

Ha that's mad. Thanks for the info (as you can see that charlie adam assist has bugged me for years!!!)

The trick is actually not to run based on that goal! He just trots forwards whilst the defenders scramble back and ends up in a nice bit of space, the finish is just a pisstake though. Unreal.

I agree on that occasion, I was talking about the assist for the second goal. Absolute brilliant football brain
 
He’s arguably at his peak and for me, just because of the numbers, he is the best the prem has seen (to date), he’s not always flawless but he doesn’t need to be when he impacts games the way he does; all the furore around Haalands numbers has seen what he is probably about to do, discounted, he could literally obliterate the assists record this year, and by some margin…

I hope he does it as he is head and shoulders above those before him in this area and he should be the benchmark for future excellence…. What a player he is and right up there with the best city has ever had!
