Old Maine Road photos thread

Always blows my mind a bit that there's now a whole generation of City fans, many of them now grown adults, that weren't born when Maine Road closed or were too young to remember anything about it

Seems like yesterday we moved to the Etihad and I can vividly remember everything about Maine Road and matches we played there

Although i live in NI i was born in England...my Dad was from Moss Side (hence why im a Blue) but because he was in the Army my earliest years were in the South of England and Germany. I was born in '75, so growing up supporting City down there was tough enough, but he never took me to Maine Road.....except one time we drove passed when visiting my Nan in '84. i was only 9 yo, but i remember being blown away seeing a proper stadium, and of the team i supported (from a distance).

The only time i actually got inside Maine Road was for that Oasis gig in 1996 :-(

What gets me is I see old fuckers at the game and think ......old ****.

Then I find out I'm ten years older than em. Looking in the mirror is a shock too.

I'm grateful I'm still here seeing the success...unlike thousands from the Kippax standing terraces in the sky.

I bought tickets for Platt Lane a couple of times back in mid sixties. 5/-.
Why? There were no numbered seats. Only the Main Stand had numbered seats at that stage.

I can’t see the point. Maine Road had a 63,000 capacity and the biggest attendance I can recall before promotion was for Huddersfield on New Years Day 1966 when 47,171 were there.

The first match I can ever recall buying a ticket for was the Everton Cup match in 1966. I remember them being sold in the turnstiles at Maine Road on a Sunday morning. After promotion, even the United matches were pay at the gate. I also bought tickets for the replay at Goodison Park and the second replay at Wolverhampton.

I usually went on the Kippax but a couple of times I took an older guy who would not have been happy there. I can’t remember the number situation, but I bought tickets to ensure the older guy was ok. Platt lane was pretty full both times.
I was at that Huddersfield game. Mad on the Kippax. 3/- iirc.
I also bought tickets for Bert’s testimonial on Platt Lane, again to accommodate a guest.
Incidently, to buy the tickets you had to go in the main entrance, down the marbled (ok terrazzo) hall to a ticket office deep inside the stadium.
