Down to him or not. the problem is he can’t seem to read the game

I’m not saying that he has to be able to see the future, but good managers can read the pattern of the game

Halfway through the first half , it was pretty clear that Jordan Henderson didn’t have the legs for this game. I’m not knocking Henderson, because I would never questioned his desire but he was stifling and slowing us down in attack. You have to read that and know you need someone there who can get on the ball.

Or there was a few minute spell where Foden drifted centrally and was pulling all of their players out of position, why not think “there might be something here” and let him stay there? take the tiring Henderson off and get Grealish or Rashford on the pitch on the left. But no, it’s just back to default setting.

Imagine looking down the bench, knowing it’s a must win game and time is ticking, seeing Grealish who can carry the ball and draws fouls, or Maddison who can change games with real quality, or a fast forward like Wilson with some pace and try 2 up too but you go “Mason, you’re on”

In a big game knockout against a good side, he’s never once made a proactive substitute to change the pattern of the game.
Can’t disagree with any of that. Playing it safe will get you so far but when we’ve come up against any team you wouldn’t expect us to beat we’ve fallen short and so has the manager. Three above average performances in the last three competition for me. Sweden, in the last World Cup, Germany in the euros, and if I’m honest, that was decent today, and we probably should have won.

You could say the same about everybody's opinion, so we might as well all sign out and shut the site down now then.
His opinion was quite strong and probably reactionary due to England losing out narrowly to france, and he's perfectly entitled to it.
As am I to disagree, so let's not pm ric just yet.

negative is the word, but done well ?

just let's get a manager with ideas and creative and wanting the players taking the ball from the back.
don't care if he is not English, just get the best manager on offer
Yes, he has done well but the real proof is a trophy. Pep isn't available either.

But they have to show for the ball and be confident to set the pace of the game. Neither Rice or Kalvin possess the confidence or technique to do it at the highest level and Henderson doesn't have enough strength or stamina.
Southgate stressed time and time again the importance of player mentality for this game... he MUST be the driving force behind any such 'confidence'. If Henderson doesn't have the strength or stamina, why is he on the pitch at all (or at least, not subbed earlier?).

* also, 'nor'

Im a fan of Southgate. He's taken us so far since 2016 and Hodgson and Allardyce, Iceland defeat, players not wanting to play for their country, player/club cliques.

We're nothing like that now, so well done him. He's also got us to finals, semi's and after 40+ years of watching England achieve nothing its been a good ride for the last few years.

Its time for him to move on now though obviously. The fans, the media want him gone. I'm getting a bit bored of his defensiveness and lack of risk. Whether its for the best we will see, but I hope we dont shoot ourselves in the foot with the next choice.

would the other top teams play Foden and Bellingham in a negative setup or have Shaw and Maguire in their defence

Not enough strength or stamina ... to play the pivot role.
