How do we resolve the Brexit mess?

I didn't want to do the whole grammar police thing, but I wasn't really drawing a direct analogy, just a comparison with the hysteria surrounding the millennium bug and that around brexit.
Surely, a comparison doesn’t carry any meaningful force unless it is analogous. Sometimes ‘hysteria’ is justified, sometimes it is not. Whether the ‘hysteria‘ around Y2K was justified is a complete non-sequitur to whether it is in relation to Brexit.

Furthermore, hysteria is a subjective term. One man’s hysteria is another man’s proportionate response. Brexit represents an existential long-term threat to this nation’s standing (relative and actual) in a way that Y2K never could or did, which arguably warrants a degree of ‘hysteria’.

As to the hive mentality, I, for one, would greatly welcome an articulate contribution to this thread from someone who can advocate the enduring case for Brexit, but there don’t seem to be many takers…

Absolutely, couldn't agree more - just being clear that I wasn't drawing an exact analogy between y2k and brexit. Just that on a personal level my experience of both was that there was much pre event flapping followed by no noticeable effect (blue passport aside!)

Most Brexiteers didn't, and still don't, give a crap about the economy; it has always has been and always will be about immigration. That's why it is always being hyped up by the media. Keep winding up the base. Come and live around here to listen to the furore about 'these people' in hotels. Hundred attended a meeting in Skegvegas a couple of weeks ago to complain.

I think we need to start housing immigrants in hotels away from the areas populated by pig ignorant racists - maybe some of the more leafy and affluent areas populated by more wealthy and generally better educated folk? They would doubtless see the opportunity to welcome increased diversity in their communities.

In other words you were just talking shit as usual to get a response. And it worked. Bit like the comment above. Let’s see how many bite on that one.

I take it they realise the government have absolutely failed on the immigration policy?

Well we don’t house immigrants they usually make their own arrangements before coming. What we do is house asylum seekers and refugees, something we wouldn’t need to do so much but for the consequences of Brexit and incompetent govement implemntation of our asylum system.

Agree with all that, but by shoving them in already deprived areas like faded glory Victorian seaside towns (skeggy as an example) we are inviting the scapegoating of them by impoverished native residents. I understand the reasoning - shit holes like skeggy have a lot of cheaply available accommodation. There is a travel lodge not to far from the BS39 6UR postcode where the Rees-Mogg family seat of Gournay Court is. Maybe refugees/asylum seekers should be housed there rather than skegvegas?

The government is managing the system in a way to cause maximum hysteria. Tories love talking tough on 'immigration' when they mean asylum seekers. The vast majority of immigrants are foreign students. Asylum seekers could be housed without a fuss, processed quickly and given the right to work. But Tories won't do that as they get far move votes if people are worried about the 'invasion'.

In what way? Genuine question as I don’t follow their fortunes but I thought it was making unsustainable losses even before covid and certainly before Brexit?
Was only being daft.

I think Covid fucked their business model for the reason you alluded to.

I was originally referring to a dreadful metropolitan woman on Question Time who said (Marie Antionette style) “who are we going to get to serve us in Pret?” (after Brexit). As much as I …errr….remain a Remainer it’s easy to understand why a working class person in the north would find that offensive and make some of them more likely to vote Leave.

Annoyingly can’t find the clip.

The problem with sea side towns is the chances of employment are already reduced by 50% given half the opportunity catchment area is under the sea.

I didn’t see that episode of QT but that would get a few backs up.
