We need a international policy that is fair and current.

This govt is useless, big shock to no one, but the alternative stupid view is just let everyone in apart from the false claimants(haha good luck with that) and they haven't a clue what to do with those.

You mean something like the 1951 UN Refugee Convention and subsequent protocols which we signed up to?

It’s beneficial for this lot in power to create a problem , perfect red meat to throw before the electorate at the next general election. Thirteen years in power and they’ve fucked everything up so they need an enemy and distraction.

Take up the French offer- from years ago- of setting up properly staffed assessment and detention centres where applications for asylum/refugee status can be processed quickly and efficiently by trained professional personnel instead of getting into boats and risking their lives.
I think that is definitely the right solution. The potential issue then is that when the UK officials determine that thousands of applicants are in fact economic migrants, ie those from Albania , what's stopping them then getting in boats and crossing. There is no easy solution to this problem.

We have gone from uncontrolled immigration from the EU with everyone able to work legally, to uncontrolled immigration with no-one able to work legally in the space of a few short years.

Does the same apply to the Ukrainians who have fled ? Should they have stayed in Poland , Hungary, Romania , Slovakia Or Moldova ? If we have a moral obligation to help one group of refugees then why doesn’t the same criteria apply to other groups?
Colour of their skin perhaps ?

I heard her being interviewed on Radio 4 this morning. She gave the impression of someone who was ill-prepared for the questions put to her and gave no confidence that her Government's proposals are legal or will stand up to legal challenge. Absolutely amateurish performance.

The population density of the this country is ridiculous, someone has to address it, Starmer melts if he leaves London, the mans a champagne socialist, Labour has NO policy on this issue, someone has to man-up, or woman-up in this case, an open door policy?...good on Braverman

After seeing her previous performances, you surely cannot be surprised ?

Last time I was in Oxfordshire it was almost empty.

Those with legitimate claims would welcome this kind of establishment.
If they have a solid claim to asylum/refugee status, and around 75% do, they would present themselves and could be dealt with quickly.
Only those without genuine claims- eg Albanian (or anywhere really) economic migrants would risk (or need to risk) getting into a boat. But without the cover of real refugees their cover would blown, so to speak, and action could be taken to arrest the hugely reduced numbers aboard dinghies and deport those who could now be confirmed as genuinely ‘illegal’ having failed to meet or avoided trying to meet, the criteria for asylum/refugee status.
We didn’t have ‘uncontrolled’ immigration from the EU.
If an EU citizen came here without a job or the means to support themselves for 3 months they could be returned to their own country. The Germans and Belgians apparently used this system on a regular basis but our governments never did for whatever reason. Possibly because they knew that we needed EU incomers to do a lot of unwanted or unpleasant jobs.
The current uncontrolled immigration is down to the political illiterates in government playing politics with people’s lives for a few votes.

I wasn't appointing blame on the uncontrolled immigration , just pointing out that it happened during our tenure in the EU.

I saw on the news yesterday that the majority of those currently coming over on boats are in fact from Albania.

It's reasonable to assume that the majority of these people are not refugees is it not? So it's reasonable to assume that once rejected they will continue to get in boats like they do now.

It's very hard to see how to stop this happening is the point I was making.

A majority don’t come from Albania ,just over a quarter do. Most likely the quarter whose claimes get rejected but thats just a guess on my part. So that leaves the 70 plus percemt whose claims are accepted and are therefore genuine. These 79 percent of genuine refugees are the one we are saying we won’t even bother listening to their story.
Also when in the EU in wasn’t uncontrolled , in fact it was needed and is still needed now.
