The BBC | Tim Davie resigns as Director General over Trump documentary edit (p 187)

PL hold the rights not SKY and BT they have fuck all to do withi it. Contracts work by two parties agreeing something and they can be talked about at anytime. That's how contracts work

SKY and BT have far more money to offer than the BBC - why do you think the BBC gets highlights and the others get live? Money talks and thats how contracts work.

On a side-note, it looks like he didn’t have anything in his contract to say that he can’t say such things and now they have to agree what he can and cannot Tweet. Which means that they cannot sack him and have to pay him while he is suspended.

Reality is that the Head of the BBC couldn’t have Lineker facing up one of their premier programmes while the country looked on in support.

Have I just fallen into a narrative of a fascist state?

This government has torn us all apart for year's. I have close friends/family who are Tories and they are being dragged in because they believe what they read. We need moderation and logic. Stop the hate.
Critical thinking and debate clubs in schools would be a great start. But that gets the plebs questioning and challenging the powers that be.

Fascism is a simple concept to use on the populace of they aren't able to stop and consider what the powers that be are telling them.

Weird over-reaction from the BBC. So what if Lineker has a different opinion to the government? In a free society he’s a right to express it, and it’s highly unlikely he’d have brought it up in MoTD, so not sure why the BBC felt he needed to step down.

All they’ve done is back themselves into a corner and make people think the BBC is a government mouthpiece rather than an entertainment company.

To add another note; Many commentators today don't even have a unique linguistic style anymore a la Motson, Davies, Drury and, when he was good, Tyler. They all just seem to be copying the Jonathan Pearce style of commentating (who to his credit isn't that bad), but when EVERY commentator copies him it all sounds so samey and irritiating as a result game by game.

Maybe look at a clear out of these banal commentators too.

This is simultaneously the most stupid and the most hilarious outcome imaginable. Sunak has had his French trip upstaged as the story now is, how Nazi is the Govt, and is the BBC a Govt mouthpiece, run by right wing political appointees.

All because of one fucking tweet that would have been forgotten about 24 hours later if they had possessed the good sense to ignore it. Instead, they went into full frothing hysteria mode (as did a couple of posters on here) and now the affair is eating everyone alive.

Unbelievable, Jeff!
Fleet Street fox made the exact same point on the papers review.

All the beeb had to say was "I thought the government supported free speech" and it would be done.

Politics aside, Lineker’s a smug, very privileged individual whose personal standards may or may not stand up to scrutiny.

A martyr he fkn well isn’t.

Whatever his origins, and despite once being of an ethnic minority (haha, remember that one?), he’s lived more than half of his life as a millionaire.

As with the news shows and many other programmes, it would do no harm to sweep out the mediocre, over-upholstered establishment favourites and nourish new talent.

In the case of MOTD, that would mean skipping a generation or two to leave the present second tier idiots conditions, give him another crack. If not, be bold and look elsewhere.

The PL is a highly saleable commodity whoever fronts the offering.

do you really think that? With a DG who has donated @£500k to the Tories and arranged a loan facility of £800k for Johnson whilst simultaneously having a guy in charge of news and current affairs who was former press sec for a Tory PM and is now on the board - do you really think it could be a govt mouthpiece Lol

That’s actually a version of MOTD that I think I’d prefer tbh.

Regardless though, this is an absolute clusterfuck by the BBC/government. They’ve backed themselves into a corner here.
Life is cruel just when you get a programme you don't have to fast forward through you boycott it.

So tomorrow night, no presenters, and no pundits, just more football.

Seems like win win to me, I rarely watch the biased shit these days, but I might watch tomorrow (though our result will be the biggest influence).

As the thread title says "ignoring the lineker stuff", so please take any political bollocks to a different thread.
That is the way to go, just show the football and let us make our own minds up. A lot cheaper for the BBC as well, should have been done years ago.

The only problem it would be the same editors that would be putting the highlight packages together. And BBC Sports web page would be still spouting their biased articles/match commentary
I know one of them and they get told by the pundits which bits to include. These guys (freelancers) are otherwise used to providing highlights packages in real time - athletics, Wimbledon etc. I expect they'll be genuinely whizzing through the footage for interesting bits rather than pushing any agenda so may be better.

Why do we need presenters anyway? Or pundits?

You need to remove the personality from the discussion. What if someone is on Desert Island Discs and expresses anti- govt policy sentiments - is Lauren Laverne public enemy no 1? If Steve Cram says something the Govt don't like is the great north run no longer covered? Its the insidious mission creep of the fascism that has always happened - since the 1930's ironically
