The BBC | Tim Davie resigns as Director General over Trump documentary edit (p 187)

Fleet Street fox made the exact same point on the papers review.

All the beeb had to say was "I thought the government supported free speech" and it would be done.

Exactly. The BBC could have had its cake and eaten it. An anodyne statement saying that the BBC is impartial and neither supports or condemns Gary Lineker’s views, but respect his right to his private opinion…blah, blah. Everyone then moves on to the next hoo-hah.

I struggle to understand how and when people running things became so fucking stupid.

They could have a an announcer.
This is Leicester v Chelsea. Then This is Crystal Palace v Manchester City.Could be a whole new format for sports broadcasting. No need for some twat to tell us what we just saw.

I know one of them and they get told by the pundits which bits to include. These guys (freelancers) are otherwise used to providing highlights packages in real time - athletics, Wimbledon etc. I expect they'll be genuinely whizzing through the footage for interesting bits rather than pushing any agenda so may be better.
Hopefully there is going to be more impartiality but it is still the bosses that will decide what to include (on this occasion).

You need to remove the personality from the discussion. What if someone is on Desert Island Discs and expresses anti- govt policy sentiments - is Lauren Laverne public enemy no 1? If Steve Cram says something the Govt don't like is the great north run no longer covered? Its the insidious mission creep of the fascism that has always happened - since the 1930's ironically

Grow up and stop producing silly examples.

Others might say it’s the insidious creep of righteous left wing individuals who keep losing at the ballot box and have no other voice.

Not that I would suggest such a thing, you understand.

I’d prefer the BBC to rise above both extremes. They are state sponsored with a captive audience and shouldn’t be be behoven to tub thumpers of either side.

Amazing the headlines this is generating. Man breaks work guidelines and gets sacked from.prsenting job is essentially what has happened.

Lineker and Shearer were tedious in the extreme, look at the positives people. Shearer in particular was truly awful.

No one down the pub tonight gave a two hoots about Lineker or his supposed virtuous stance. Im thinking that represents the vast majority of British people.

Can football have a say in politics?

We are always divided in football and get fucked over many times by the powers that be because of it. With all pundits, commentators and players coming together, is it time for us as fans to tell the authorities to duck off as well?

Only if you support Lineker’s stance, of course.

I’ve always defended the BBC as we need a service that tries its best to be impartial- but definitely now worried it’s going down a very slippery right wing path and todays decision is not a good look

It's not that the BBC is choosing to go down this route, it's being forced to kowtow to a Tory government that's spent years attacking it for being "lefty" while installing their own people to push it right under threat of defunding.

And the kicker is that undermining people's trust in the BBC just furthers the objective, which is to eliminate a politically balanced state broadcaster. So this all blowing up and people realising how deep the government has its claws into the beeb is great for them.

Really depressing state of affairs , already got so many oddball right wing channels. Could really do with the BBC maintaining its balance in spite of the Tory threats

I think many in the UK supported the BBC. What you show there should make people think and understand the reality of where this country is going.

True. They range from tired/over-exposed through to dross and some of the others waiting in the wings are no better.
