The BBC | Tim Davie resigns as Director General over Trump documentary edit (p 187)

On this issue I really not sure but they must realise that the are potentially damaging their futures with the BBC.

The BBC has royally fucked itself here and will want nothing more than for this to go away over the coming days so it can go back to normal and pretending it never happened.

Lineker might not come back but I’m convinced a few of the Tories working behind the scenes at the BBC will also be gone and rightly so.

No other presenters careers will be damaged over the stance they have taken imo.

I don’t mind a bit of Lineker and co talking shite on a Saturday night. All harmless and definitely not anti City. Not sure where people get that impression from?
Glass or red in hand, football on telly, feet up, no work in the morning. Perfect (unless City have lost).
Too many want constant and instant gratification.
Errrr....sure you've been watching it then?

I agree with the BBC overreaction point, but I fear that ultimately it is the British public, and the World, that will reap what is being sown. All BBC employees, irrespective of their contract type, will now likely refrain from issuing their thoughts for fear of the consequences, or they will seek employment at outlets where freedom of speech and thought are accepted. That is unhealthy and dispiriting. The BBC belongs to everyone, not the political power of the day, whichever hue, and I’ve never met anyone who has lived abroad who hasn’t gained newfound respect for its work.

What worries me most is the reactions and fall outs to even the most innocent of tweets to be honest.

What he said in no way warrants the reactions and fall outs we are seeing, it’s ridiculous.

Lineker is a citizen before he is a BBC employee or contractor and he has every right to say what he likes so long as it is within the law.

Haven't watched MOTD in years if I do it's MOTD 2 as there's much less waffle + better segments like 2 Good 2 Bad and all highlights are in an 1 hour condensed window.

Do not miss pundits like "Wrighty", Shearer, Lineker etc making the same tired jokes & observations week in week out. Highlights on Sky Sports YouTube page an hour after games & City extended highlights are much better viewing in my experience.

Not everyone has sky and the internet, especially the older generation. My dad loved match of the day ,before he got ill and now in a home.

I believe the BBC contract with the PL limits highlights to max 10 mins per game. MotD could be just put out as a You Tube shorts or a tick tock from now on
10 mins a game on average, which means 20mins for the Rags and Scousers and 5mins for everyone else?

On a serious note I didnt know that.

It doesn't look like contractually he should have tweeted what he did reading the above.

I don’t get this false upset shown because he brought up Germany in the 1930s. All this “you can’t say that“ BS.

Agreed but the BBC allowed him to use their platform to criticise Qatar when it suited mate.

The BBC is full of political commentary these days, you can’t get away from it.

His sanction here is nothing more than the government and their mates at the BBC not liking what he said about them im afraid.

It has fuck all to do with them enforcing their own rules fairly.

Indeed, but it would appear that even if it is relatively benign and lawful, it can still cost a person their employment. I think the sooner he is rehabilitated the better, otherwise ‘whataboutery‘ will see more out of a job and the Test Card back on.

One silver lining out of all this, hopefully they cancel that god awful apprentice show seeing as the Alan sugar is all over Twitter spouting right wing views. Surely they need to suspend him as well now… bet they don’t tho.

Shouldn’t ever see Andrew Neil on there again either even tho he was interviewed about this situation…

Tory/BBC political commissars are busy at work as we speak.

Sorry if I`ve got this completely wrong but I don`t see Michas name being banded about as to one of GL followers who is also boycotting the show, in solidarity ??
Micah put out a tweet last night saying that he wasn't due to be on MOTD tonight but if he had been he would have withdrawn in solidarity (words to that effect, my statement is not verbatim).

I believe that was mentioned earlier in the thread. Not sure of the page, it was before the thread was moved.

It really annoys me comparing Alan Sugar to Linekar. One works for the BBC one doesn't, a clue in case you can't guess Sugar works for Freemantle who make the Apprentice and sell it to the BBC. They could just as easily decide to sell it to channel 4 (as the makers of the Great British Bake Off did).
To expect people with no contractual relationship with the BBC to be required to follow impartiality rules because they are on a programme broadcast by the BBC is for the birds. I mean Sully: Miracle on the Hudson is on BBC1 on Tuesday does that mean Tom Hanks should be forced to comply with impartiality ru
les?

All the r/w trolls on twitter are there to attack Lineker and his fellow presenters - interestingly not one of them that I have seen says anything in support of Sunak's small boats "deal" with Macron. They are just using it as a platform to bash the BBC and get the license fee deleted.

Always amazed how the free speech anti cancel culture warriors react to this stuff

Why would this possibly impact Sugar? He isn't employed by the BBC nor does he have a contractual relationship with them. The apprentice is owned by Freemantle who sell the series to the BBC. If they want to shift it to Channel 4 because they will pay more they can.

There is a Tom Hanks Film on the BBC this week - do you think he should be bound by BBC impartiality rules too?

Yeah, I wasn’t due to be on MOTD tonight either, but I’ve decided to withdraw in solidarity too.
