The BBC | Tim Davie resigns as Director General over Trump documentary edit (p 187)

Is this ironic or is it just my sense of humour?

I bet a BECTU member on the scheduling team took the chance to get some trolling in - the BBC have fucked themselves over one tweet - quite poetic

its the fucking smirk that gives him away - all these wankers are so sure of themselves they cannot help but smirk thinking they are getting one over on us

But they are.

They have the power and we have fuck all, what are we going to do about it? The answer is nothing, nothing that'll seriously bother them.

Perversely it works in their favour, while kids go hungry and folk shiver in their homes, all anyone is talking about is Gary Lineker, net worth £26 million.

This is a spat between different wings of the same fucking class.

Talking of abuse to presenters... Here's what Adam Hills had tweeted at him last night after their segment on Lineker/Small boats crisis:

I watched that live - at the end Adam looked visibly shaken and upset but he was right to read that shit out and link it to Sunak and Braverman and their language

I would respect him more if he offered to put up a 100 or so refugees in temporary accomodation at his mansion.

Actually early 1930s Germany is a worthwhile analogy. Not what it descended into when it grew in confidence and became increasingly malign as it was further consumed by evil; but what it started as. Reducing personal liberties, suppressing freedom of speech and blaming particular groups for societies ills.

Don’t be so complacent that the current direction of travel cannot continue along a similar path. I’m sure plenty of Jewish people dismissed the early days of Nazi government as just a phase. Don’t be overwhelmed with the benefit of hindsight and assume that what the Nazi party became was inevitable. Maybe it could have been stopped embarking on its genocidal course if enough decent people had spoken out when they could.

So yes, it’s absolutely balanced to caution against history repeating itself. Not because we are at the concentration camp stage, but to try and ensure that we don’t end up there.
I don’t disagree in the main, GDM. On the contrary, you make very valid points.

As it happens, although I generally lean to the right, I believe the government has created a smokescreen to cover their piss poor management of immigration over a number of years. And the smoke is a little bit acrid.

However, it’s a two-way street. Inflammatory language, racism and intolerance are not the preserve of the right. There’s a shed load of flame fanning from the left too. You don’t need me to give examples - and to do so would only provoke attack - but a glance at almost every political thread on Bluemoon confirms the degree of bitterness and division that pervade today’s world.

If the BBC hadn’t reacted to Lineker’s latest utterances, they would have added fuel to the widespread “woke” claims. Having now acted, they stand accused of undue government influence and double standards. They cannot win.

Will anybody win? Is Lineker a worthy martyr? Has the situation promoted reasonable debate or brought a peaceful society any closer? Or has it just sent everyone rushing to their barricades?

Gets better and better, well done to the BBC they have got rid of all the multifarious and gobby pundits at a stroke.

WONDERFUL.

Yeah really smart move - want to see replays and analysis of our goals today - the Beeb can't do that. What did Pep think about our performance - the Beeb won't be airing that - still all those pundits you dislike are gone so alls good. I bet you are dead happy to start a rail journey and see the words "replacement bus service in operation" - all those well paid train drivers are cancelled - what joy

First off I must say great post, I enjoyed reading that.

I don't really dissagree with much of that. Except to say personally I still don't think it was the right analogy to make and that Lineaker did it deliberately to get the reaction that it has. He could have said the rhetoric is similar to that of many modern countries and he dissagreed with it.

Anyway , it looks like things are rapidly escalating and drawing in more people, and neither side will back down.

Popcorn time.

Obviously only Lineker himself and maybe his close circle will know whether his tweet was a calculated piece or a more spontaneous opinion. I suspect either way he chose that analogy because it's the one that people most readily understand. There are probably more technically accurate ones but not as immediately understandable by a broad swathe of people. If it was an explicit piece of activism it might have been a deliberate 'fight fire with fire' strategy the merits of which is whole other conversation.

As you say this has now gone way beyond the content of the original tweet and is now focused on the relationship between the public broadcaster and the government of the day and the relationship between the broadcaster and the people who work there.

I think this is a very healthy debate.

The form that debate is likely to take is another matter. Historically the use of propaganda, whilst very powerful, was only one of several forms of public discourse. However, the nature of the current generation of social media amplifies the role of propaganda (of any colour) to a point where it drowns out so much else. Imo the sooner we learn how to use the technology and sensibly hold it's owners to account, the better.

I would respect him more if he offered to put up a 100 or so refugees in temporary accomodation at his mansion.
I doubt you would because your small mind is already made up about him. That he has already housed refugees has probably passed you by and the facility to house 100 in his “mansion” is a fantasy of yours.

The statement wasn’t clear at all.

Agreed, it wasn't.

But this is.....

BBC rules on social media

Well done Bristol Rovers who were the first to come out and actually say they would not be doing interviews before or after their game today.

I see the BBC have said they will not be requesting interviews at any grounds. I'd loved to have seen who did respond and say no and who didn't! I bet Karren Brady at West Ham would have made sure that they cooperated with the BBC and made their manager and players be interviewed!!

I would imagine Gary will, in the end say something generic that will be a backing down of sorts while ot really backing down. A 'I recognise I shouldn't said that with my association to the bbc, but i am a passionate outspoken guy and will always have values blah blah'. The bbc will similarly reinforce their commitment to impartiality and also free speech, and how valued he is as a pundits. There will be one or two awkward episodes and grimmaces and then it'l move on.

Could be wrong.

Btw, I know with the number of responses between us in a short time, it may look like I'm either latching onto a lot of what you say or picking out yours specifically. That is not the case, the discussions just went that way, and most of it was genuine exchange of stances. I feel the same of your responses too, even the opposing ones, just thought I'd note it for clarity.

I agree with your sugested possible resolution.
No problem at all , I enjoy the debate on here. I like to play devil's advocate at times, probably a bit too much. But I feel no malice towards anyone. Have a good day. I'm off clay shooting , should be interesting as I haven't shot anything for 17years. Lol

How can anyone take "BBC IMPARTIALITY" seriously when the Director General is a former Chairman of a Tory constituency, stood twice for election as a Tory, donated £400,000 to the Tory party and facilitated the loan of £800,000 for a self-servative Prime Minister.

This is state censorship and nothing else.
It was fine and acceptable for Linaker to highlight Human Rights abuses both on Social Media and on the BBC, but when he highlights potential Human Rights abuses in his own country being proposed by the party his boss is a member of the Nazti party try to silence him.
The Tories in control of the Beeb have shot themselves in both feet here, and instead of "having a quiet word" have placed themselves firmly on the front pages and open for a level of scrutiny they deserve but seldom get.
I suspect they did “have a quiet word“ and were politely told to fcuk off.

Quiet words and carefully worded statements from both sides would have been the only way to stop this escalating.

It will be interesting to see who blinks first.

Funny a fuck watching all the Lefties getting upset at cancel culture.

I want to know the logic behind this.

So you're against cancel culture when it involves actual sexual misconduct or racism, but it's funny when the person calling out racist rhetoric is being censored?

What're the mental gymnastics involved to think you're on the righ side of this?
