The purpose of curry, sold in fish and chip shops, is to cover up the taste of bang-average (or worse) chips. I have often indulged for that very reason, not least at a former workplace, where the nearest chippy's chips were always undercooked and indifferent. If you cook proper chips, there is no need for it at all. But curry often makes poor chips quite tolerable, if you are hungry.
