Do you support the RMT?

I've been to Germany twice in the last month and they've recently had regional bus and rail strikes. Some services didn't run but many buses definitely did run however they refused to take your money. This happens in Japan as well so it guarantees the service but hits the government or companies running the service.

In this day and age where service providers are private companies, surely hitting them in the wallet is key as opposed to hitting people who for example just want to attend an FA cup final?

I don't work in rail or anything but is it possible to still run a service but refuse to take money? Or is the system built in such a way that it either runs with people paying or it doesn't run at all?

Banned in the UK that I believe, as they know its effective!

The bizarre contractual obligations mean thats a NO. Refusal to take fares whilst services are running is deemed illegal and the victims are two fold. Firstly the travelling public - travelling without paying is illegal and makes the non-paying traveller liable to prosecution, fine possible imprisonment and getting a criminal record. Second the Union faces sequestration of its assets for the action taken by its members.

The second bizarre bit is whilst the above is going on or if it isn't and there are just no trains running the contracts for the train companies are written in such a way that the Govt ( ie us the taxpayer ) pay the train companies the fares they could have expected on strike days so they don't lose out. I suspect thats the only way they could get anyone interested in the contracts in the first place.

University strikes are still going on too. The most recent one is an assessment boycott. But the problem with things like that is that it doesn't hit the university in the pocket at any point. Uni staff are striking for good reason, like most others, but tuition is paid at the beginning of the year, and they don't then give refunds for missed teaching, which of course they should.

Shame, but RCN really should have been wise to this:
They are still on strike for two days i think ? Gov have achieved very little and the nurses will strike again and the public suopport them still. Asking the nurses to pay there legal fees is an additional slap in the face , hope the nurses make the fucking gov suffer , bunch of fucking cunts

That'll be the next Tory step. Keep taking them to court and bankrupt them

That report makes me so angry. This government should be *excuse my language * confined to hell. They can find the money to fund top price barristers and their employees but can’t fund a salary increase for the people who worked under heartbreaking conditions during the Covid crisis and since!
The Tory Government are heartless monsters. I thought Thatcher was bad but this lot are disgusting, disgraceful, repulsive monsters!!

Time the unions got smart - many ways to skin a cat.
Can you suggest something we've not thought about that won't sequest the union as it's illegal under trade union legislation?

We've called the 13th May out now as the government have changed their "interpretation" of the offer. Accept 5% and no strikes. They can fuck off.

The Tories don't want it resolved. They want to use us as a political tool to further their authoritarian general election policy.

Dear RMT Member

DEFEND JOBS, PAY & CONDITIONS - TRAIN OPERATING COMPANIES

STRIKE ACTION CALLED FOR SATURDAY 13TH MAY 2023

Today I received clarification from the Rail Delivery Group regarding its views on the Dispute Resolution Proposals.

Astonishingly, the RDG confirmed that the proposed Year One payment of 5% or £1750 is dependent on our dispute being formally terminated and no further action being taken. This would mean having to move into stage two discussions regarding changes to working practices and terms and conditions without an industrial action mandate being in place, leaving the Union dis-armed and leaving members vulnerable in the face of detrimental proposals and a very poor pay offer.

This new position from the RDG makes a mockery of the proposed 'dispute resolution' and is no doubt due to interference and pressure from the Tory Government. The RDG has completely reneged on the spirit of the document previously proposed in a move which contradicts and overturns the basis on which we had recently been considering this matter.

In addition to the above, the proposals provided for Driver grades are not even on a par with those for other grades with Drivers only offered 4% in each year on the basis of a long list of Workforce Changes for the grade.

I have produced a video which will be available on the RMT website, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter accounts later this evening.

The National Executive Committee has declared that this situation is intolerable and unacceptable and it has undermined our negotiations. The proposals for Drivers are also wholly unacceptable.

The National Executive Committee has called on all members involved in this dispute to take strike action and NOT TO BOOK ON for any shifts between:

· 00:01 to 23:39 hours on Saturday 13th May 2023

The NEC will of course be considering this matter and further industrial action dates next week when the re-ballots close on Thursday 4th May and I will of course keep you advised of all further developments.

MAKE SURE TO RETURN YOUR BALLOT PAPER NOW!

STAND TOGETHER! KEEP FIGHTING!

Yours sincerely,

Michael Lynch
General Secretary

They got clapped on the doorstep, what more do they want?
Praise rather than reward: A management (and politicians) dream theory.

Got my "Were disappointed the RMT and ASLEF have put on more action" email.

Along with the "economic hardships the railways face..."

Neglecting to add that management gave themselves a 5% payrise plus "One off bonus for their hard work in a challenging year..."

Or the £96,000 payrise the MD was awarded "For hard work maintaining the business during COVID"

They really think their employees are gullible and stupid.

Average FTSE CEO pay rise this year is 23% which must be ‘inflationary’!
It’s a shame many working people can’t see what’s staring them in the face….
