James McAtee

I'd loan him back to Sheffield United for another season and see how he goes on playing consistent PL-level football.

I think there is a space here for him. We can gradually ease him in. Bernardo and Gundo potentially leaving, and Kevin is getting older. He doesn't need to play a lot, to begin with. He is good enough to be given a shot, IMO. If he isn't, then who is? Imagine if we all said the same about Foden a few years back. It's now or never for the lad, give him a season here and let's see how he does.

I understand that idea, but I don't agree. In another team maybe but I think they're going to struggle massively next season. Sometimes momentum and confidence is everything in football and now McAtee is full of it, time to take advantage.

I dont think a season of barely seeing the ball and getting beaten most weeks will do much for him. He already proven he's up for a battle in the Championship, won his place in the team and adapted to the physical football.

At Southampton this season so far, Edozie has managed 545 league minutes and Lavia 1,903 league minutes. Now I know it's apples and pears, but I reckon if McAtee and Doyle stay at Sheffield United for next season, it'll be the latter who gets more 'experience', and certainly see more of the ball.

When the next season starts, de Bruyne will have already turned 32 and by February Mahrez will have turned 33. He’s developed physically and is ready for the next challenge.
they are both still important and miles ahead of macatee even as a rotation option.

Would you accept 2nd or 3rd finish in the PL next season if it meant MacAtee, Palmer, Lewis or even others got more game time, develop successfully, and set us up for the next 6 to 8 years?

Of course they are, but it makes more sense to have him around and integrate him slowly next season, so that the year after he is able to shoulder more of the playing time.
that only works if you are a generational talent like foden. other players need game time to make the next step. look at how palmer has stagnated compared to foden's growth. else you will just be a permanent bit part player like zinc or gomez.

That’s not going to happen, but Lewis and one of the other players will get more game time next season anyway. We probably aren’t going to finish 2nd or 3rd because of them either

Do you think we would finish lower if we have Kalvin Philips minutes to any of our youngsters ? :)
I know what you mean. By now, I'm firmly in the camp that doesn't expect anything from our signings in the first 9/12 months so Erling has been a welcome success very early for me!
Jack has taken over 12 months to 'settle' but at least he was fit in that period! Pep doesn't usually give up on players so I think he has another 6 months. He doesn't play the same position as James, obviously, but I would love to know Pep's plan for James. We've seen so many young playmakers come through the academy over the years, it would be nice for another to convert all that god given talent into benefitting city.

Best case scenario is Sheff Utd get a takeover done quickly, the new owners come in and spend big and will look at Doyle and McAtee as being key parts of their survival next year and so agree to something like 40/50m for both with buy backs etc for us.

Reminds me of a Dortmund Gundo, just left footed.
IF we lose Gundo and Bernardo then McAtee should get some minutes. He's the closest I've seen to Gundo's skillset out of what we have. Obviously not at Gundo level yet but the tools are there. Has that ability to arrive in the area like Gundo too.

I hope he is given a chance in the first team next season.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Palmer goes out on loan and Mcatee gets a chance with the fist team next season. If he does suspect he’ll make a better fist of taking it. For no other reason than the good a year in the championship will have done him.
