The "which famous person died today" thread

I know there aren't many Jazz fans on here but I have to mention the death of Ahmad Jamal.
One of the greatest ever pianists to walk the earth, not just a virtuoso but a genius as well.
And by all accounts a lovely man.
RIP Ahmad and thank you for your beautiful music.

A mate of mine lent me "Live at the Blackhawk" many years ago. I started to get into jazz on the strength of it. It looks like he passed mid April? Belated RIP to another great.

Crazy, i'd dusted off me copy of 'The Awakening' just a few days before he passed n made his transition to Rest In Beats ♫ ♬ ♩ ♪ ♫ ♬ ♭ ♮

92 years of fine age is a great innings.

2 of my favorite tracks off of 'The Awakening' have always stood out from the rest for me personally n how they later went on to be sampled rather excellently by Common n Nas, respectively.

The 2 tracks in question: 'I love music' n 'Dolphin dance', Nas used 'I love music' on his 'The world is yours' (94) n Common did a great job using a particular chord from 'Dolphin dance' throughout his 'Resurrection' hit of 94.

Have we missed this? Jim Fox, part of the Olympic gold medal winning team in the modern pentathlon in 1976, has died.
It was during that contest that Fox unmasked the Russian cheat Boris Onishenko who had a concealed switch in his epee enabling him to register a hit when none had occurred. Fox insisted that Onishenko’s sword was minutely examined and the cheat unmasked. Fox and Onishenko were friends and Fox was so upset he performed badly in the next two disciplines. Britain however mounted a dramatic comeback on the final day and took the gold medal by the slimmest of margins.
Onishenko was sent back to Russia and never heard of again in the West.
RIP Jim Fox.

Never heard of him but interesting story, surprised it wasn't made into a TV drama

She is best known for her seventies hit singles which included: Rock-a-Doodle-Doo (1973), Sideway Shuffle (1973) and her version of Betty Everett's Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss).

Linda

The British singer also provided backing vocals for a variety of musicians, including David Bowie, Al Kooper, Cat Stevens and Rod Stewart.

Seems we almost missed the passing of Gordon Lightfoot too - my fave was always Daylight Katy - RIP

Wonderful artist and fortunate to see him at Festival Hall many years ago , still performing till the end.

Deserved his own thread so we gave him one currently on page 2.

If you wanna know
why he loves you so
its in his kiss

Night Linda RIP

She had an amazing vocal range and enjoyed a successful career supporting other acts. Much more to her than "rock a doodle doo" and the " kiss" song. Sad news, RIP big girl.

Saw him live in HK about 25yrs ago. Absolutely brilliant show.
I've been catching up on loads of his stuff on Youtube - the Les Patterson stuff isn't just work of a comic genius; he was an acting genius too. Fuckin' hilarious over so many decades. A massive body of work to enjoy - and it's all timeless.
