If the penalty had gone in the atmosphere would have gone up a notch. And the Poznan would have been done. As it was, the penalty miss allowed Leeds a chance to get back into the game, which they took, and the last 10 minutes including injury time was nervy. TBH the final whistle was a relief and welcomed.

Good to know that going for a treble with 2 home games left is not enough on its own to get an atmosphere.

On a serious note I thought the first half was ok but the second half was dreadful.

Nobody said the atmosphere is poor every game but lots commented that it wasn’t great against Leeds. That’s because it wasn’t for much of the game. Real Madrid will look after itself like arsenal and Bayern did. The anthems will spread around the ground.

Your comments in this thread recently prove to me the big disconnect we now have between the singing areas and the rest of the stadium inlower key games. We have games like Saturday where very little gets going beyond a few hundred behind the goal and then the people in those areas come on here getting all indignant.

In the first half whilst 3 or 400 of you were having a great time Follow following the boys in blue everywhere on loop the rest of the stadium sat in silence waiting for the all too occasional Blue Moon and the Leeds fans just sang Marching on Together over you.

There have been some over the top and ridiculous posts about our home support on this thread recently and over the season

I’m not saying our home support has been brilliant or even good for every home game because it hasn’t, but over the season our support has been pretty decent for most of our home games, especially for the big games, and when you compare it to the home support at other PL grounds.

Some posters on this thread have been and are still too critical of our home support, which is frankly absurd.

You know what I meant. I explained it in my post. As you and others like to point out constantly, our home support isn’t made up of Ultra robots and it responds to what’s going on the pitch.

I agree some comments are over the top. I agree that it’s been good at times. I comment on this thread though because I am absolutely convinced that the atmosphere could be so much better if the stadium had one big voice instead of three small ones. As you well know by now I also think the insistence of singing the concourse loop songs twenty times on the trot is sucking the life out of the rest of the stadium at the times when they are actually up for it. The last two games have been the worst for that this season. They could have been really raucous but the opportunity was blown.

I enjoyed the discussion on Cheesy’s show, some good points were made. I have to say thought that “Follow Follow” is the breakthrough song of this season, even in a fairly average atmosphere at the weekend it was breaking out like wildfire around the ground.

"ARE-SEH-NUL, ARE-SEH-NUL, ARE-SEH-NUL..."

There's not a person in the stadium that doesn't know the words to that, cause it's so easy.

I think Jonny Stones and Ohh Kevin De Bruyne are classic examples of super easy chants that nobody has an excuse not to join in with. And it shows cause everyone does join in.

I don’t agree though that Arsenal’s atmosphere has been “fantastic” this season. It’s just a media myth that the Arsenal mafia in the media have said often enough to convince people that it must be right but it isn’t. A few hundred spotty teenagers all deciding to wear black T-shirts does not an atmosphere make.

A lot of the stadium wide chants were not started by south stand level 1, they were actually started by the family stand. They were pretty much all of the city classic songs - we never win at home, best team in the land, we love you city, bluemoon…

The clap along songs are great and I will join in. But it’s got to a point where they are being sung more and louder than the classics in ss1. There needs to be more of a balance.

No their atmosphere has been fantastic but thats to be expected with it being their best season in nearly 20 years. I'm not talking about their Ashburton lot, I think that's a load of shit.

Most of the noise at Arsenal actually comes from the other end of the stadium, its actually a perfect example that proves Daves point.

The Ashburton lot sing their fast paced clapping songs, and only about 100 people ever join in.

The other end of the ground sing club anthems and very simple songs and the whole stadium joins in.

I was at Emirates when we played them this season, and the atmosphere was certainly on par with the atmosphere that we created for them the other week.

Why doesn't everybody else just learn the words to the new songs so they can join in? I don't get to any away games anymore but that's what I did.

Because a really large section of the fanbase aren't actually interested in creating an atmosphere. Many of them will join in when they know the words, but simply have no interest in learning new songs.

We need to get these people singing for our atmosphere to be great, which is why reverting to the basics is the best idea. Telling people to learn the words isn't the solution unfortunately

Fair points. I'm probably not alone though in being consistently surprised at the comments in this thread. I get home from every game and have a read in here and it's mostly negative comments. I've been to every game at home this season and feel like since the PL allegations (the turning point) the atmosphere has been great, obviously not for 90 minutes of every game but generally hugely improved on precious seasons. I love the new songs and I also love seeing the family stand regularly getting the Poznan going plus joining in with all the old classics. Not sure what everybody's issue is on here, can only think they're watching on tele and relying on the sparsely distributed or totally turned down microphones of Sly/BT sports to gauge how good the atmosphere is. Far away from a true reflection.

Yeah I completely agree, armchair fans have absolutely no right to complain about the atmosphere.

I think a lot get frustrated because they know how good our atmosphere could be, and we're not really fulfilling that potential. I hope the new north stand gives us a massive boost

I agree, the best chants to spread fast in all the stands are the short and repetitive ones, such as "City! City! City!". That is by far the loudest and most intimidating one we have as it doesn't require the stands to be in sync, with such a fast loop it will always sound like one big voice. I just wish it was used more often.

A Chelsea mate of mine told me that the most intimidated he's felt in a football ground was on in the SS1 away end with all corners of the ground chanting "City" whilst punching their fists into the air

If you don't sit in the South Stand it's quite hard to even make out the words as it's just a murmur, let alone join in. I only know the words cause I go to away games, if I didn't I'd be clueless.

It might be hard to believe, but some people don't go to the match to sing. Some people go simply to watch the football.

Because of this, they're simply not gonna spend time learning the lyrics to songs which never even get going around them anyway. This is why I always say we need to sing the classics, because then even a really casual singer can join in

We focus too much on song choice here. Songs are only a tiny fraction of what makes a decent 'atmosphere'.

Although I agree with the logic of what Didsbury Dave says, there are no excuses for blues in the other three stands who sit on their hands and go silent. You can boo, cheer, whistle, shout, wave a scarf, bring a flag, clap your hands, stand up, go mad when we score etc...

The best atmosphere we've had at the Etihad was against Liverpool in 2019 and we barely sang anything.

Just put your phone down and make a racket!
