Etihad Atmosphere - 2022/23

I’ve asked Gary Oldman how many people should be shouting non stop on Wednesday night to create the most intimidating atmosphere of all time.

Gary has just got back to me…

I was amazed they actually said something disparaging about Arsenal's atmosphere yesterday. If I remember rightly they were referring to how it had been in previous seasons and how it's improved this year.

I can't imagine them ever doing the same with the cult or the rags. They know there'd be buried with thousands of OFCOM complaints from London and Dublin.
The atmosphere at Anfield and Old Trafford is dire for the run-of-the mill matches and that's the case for most other Premier League stadiums. This is the reality. Their fans get up for the big matches just like everyone else. Meanwhile our away following is fantastic and always has been since I started going away in the 1970s. Yesterday was as loud as we have been at Goodison (at least since the 81 Fa Cup Quarter Final) Don't pay any attention to the fanboy pundits who don't attend matches.

For the record. I’ve got nothing against Everton fans. I hope Everton stay up.

Pre-match.

City go into the Goodson Park bear pit. The Everton fa from our bit.ns will create a hostile atmosphere. Blah, blah, blah.

I think I heard 2 Stadium loud chants of Everton, Everton, Everton all match. That was it.

It just shows how untruths about support and atmospheres at certain grounds are created and continued by the football media.

Compare that to how the atmosphere at the Etihad is reported in general, even though we sing throughout the game, and all the different songs we sing.

Like I posted previously, compare our home support to other teams home support and you’ll soon realise how good our home support really is.(in general)
On the telly it was all Everton with a murmur from our side.

Towards the end of the game sky turned us 'up' but for the average person watching we were shite. Away mic's are normally high there too. I've no doubt we were banging tunes out either.

You all know I don't miss an opportunity to take a picture. ;-)

Talking of mics. Right above the top tier of the City/away fans.

This and what you posted proves that Sly Sports and BT do turn the sound (and singing) down that comes through the TV.

Ask anyone who went to Everton yesterday, it was non stop and loud City singing for most of the match, with the odd Everton chant

Interesting. Stream I was watching on was a US one, can't remember what channel but we sounded loud throughout. Kept picking up the Ederson & Ake... chant. Heard the Everton fans occasionally but it seemed like we were dominating the atmosphere

I thought the same. Definitely must be a thing as when Pep and the players went over at the end it looked absolutely bouncing.

I watched it in Bein Sports. Could only hear the City fans most of the game. The crowd noise is far quieter on Sky, than Bein or Optus channels

Yeah I thought that too mate, whereas I knew we'd be loud as we always are away from home. Mad they go to the trouble to turning the mic's down/off. You could see it was bouncing when Pep and the players went over, but even then it wasn't as loud as it will have been.

They do it for our home games too though. There have been a number of games this season where the atmosphere has been buzzing and pre-match that's been mentioned on BBC Sport (Arsenal at home) and by the pundits on BT sport - pretty sure Wio said it for the Bayern game. But then it's quiet when you watch the highlights back despite it being loud for a lot of the game. Arsenal doesn't come across anywhere near as loud as it was, whereas the highlights of Liverpool in 2019 it comes across as bouncing and very intimidating when we booed their every touch.

Almost as bad as our 'Haaland, Haaland' one. There's some great efforts on his thread and I'm particularly fond of the Billy Ocean one. Hopefully one of those gets a bit of momentum.

Not a massive fan of Blue Moon to be honest as it's too short to be an anthem and a bit monotonous. It can sound impressive at first but after repeating the same verse a few times it soon peters out.

Agree though, our chants are usually a lot more creative than most. I'm particularly partial to the ones that incorporate a bit of humour like the Balotelli one.

Some decent ones introduced this season like 'follow', 'best defence in Europe' and 'everywhere' by the Mac. Sound great at away games and beginning get traction at home.
Have to disagree with you on Blue Moon, Edgy...I love the sentiment. I just think we sing it too fast.

Even when the atmosphere is OK with Red clubs they have hardly any songs. Take 'Arsenal, Arsenal' - zero effort and in a London accent it sounds like they're celebrating our Erling these days.
That arsenal chant is the most jarring thing going haha.

I will say though that these simple chants are the very best for getting the whole stadium involved.

Take Jonny Stones and Ohh Kevin De Bruyne. Both so unbelievably simple, but both create an absolute racket when sung

Forget Anfield. The Etihad is the hardest place to get a result in world football right now. The stats prove that.

And when us fans are on our game it's near enough impossible to get anything.

Wednesday we play another top side, and we're going to show what power the Etihad Factor has

Yep less is definitely more.

I’ll tell you what still irks me to this day - the Zaba situation.

We had a perfectly good song which everyone knew the words to and joined in with Doo doo doo Pablo Zabaleta and then all the daft selfie video kids invented this silly overlong over wordy sweary Zaba chant which even name checks rags and which most of the ground still don’t know the words to.

It was an absolute crime that at his farewell game we just got a muffled version of that nonsense from the singing end rather than the whole ground belting out the original and better chant

I'd probably prefer it if we sang at least one of the other verses as well. Agree that Blue Moon (& many others) are sang too quickly. Don't think we can be blamed for the Blue Moon speed though when the club blast out the 200mph version just before kick-off.

We'll probs have to agree to disagree on this one cause I bloody love the Pablo Zabaleta song.

The one that still winds me up is that we stopped singing "oh oh edin dzeko" for some song about Gerard slipping and Suarez Crying

The Hasland one is fine, as easy as they come and gets sung loudly, especially at away matches. Nothing to dislike

It's ok after he's just scored (which he does with great frequency to be fair). During the game itself though there's lots of creative ones on his chant thread that would be much better suited during open play.
