Songs We’ve Plagiarised Into Chants

@Gary James did a magnificent explanation of how this song, which is absolutely 100% unique to City, came about at his City Film Show at The Dancehouse a few years ago.
In depth investigations of our 1970s away fixtures, cross referenced with archive copies of The Radio Times/TV Times on microfiche at Central Library to see when the film was repeated on TV.
He ended up having to check the different regional broadcasts
I loved doing the detective work. I tell a shorter version of the story during this online history talk I did last year. If you don’t want to watch the full talk, jump to about 23mins 40 seconds for the Viking Call story:

Another one I investigated in-depth for something was We Never Win At Home… which some said was first sung in late 1990s but I remember singing it every week during that miserable year when we didn’t win away in 1980s and some fans told me it was sung often in 1979 too. The tune is the Tennessee Wig Walk:

Was that recorded - I would love to watch that
It wasn’t but I did an online version of the talk and recorded that. I didn’t use the original script as I’d lost it so it’s not quite the same, but I do use the original slides. You can watch it here:

I too said it was sang in the 80s but one or two said it originated in the 90s. Although i was fairly sure it was sung in the mid 80s i can't remember what year though, although i won't be surprised if it started in 79. What year didn't we win away, Gary? My memory ain't what it was pal.

@jrb Great thread this, cheers mate.

87 - all changed at Bradford in 87-88 then year after we had the promotion game there. It was absolutely being sung in mid 80s and was probably more popular (if that’s the right word) than at any other time. It disappeared for a while at start of PL but those struggles from 95-96 brought it back.
