Glastonbury 2023

I don't even know how she can turn up 30 minutes late for her set, you have to be on site all day usually because tour buses and whatever is transporting gear have scheduled slots for arrival and departure because of the chaos of the backstage and loading areas. So its not like she wouldn't have been there for hours.

I remember going years ago and Evan Dando (front man of The Lemonheads) turned up late (and in a 'tired and emotional' condition) for his set in one of the tented stages. He was insistent about going on, whilst the organisers were equally insistent about not letting him. It all ended in a bit of a fracas and Mr Dando being ushered away out the back by Security. Hacked off, cos I'd been waiting patiently for his set, I left said tent and, trying to take a short cut around the back of it, was delighted to discover that a newly liberated Dando had decided to go down fighting by climbing up on the roof of a transit van with an acoustic guitar. He got through 3 or 4 numbers for the benefit of about two dozen cheering, short cut seeking, souls like myself, before some dirty grass alerted security and another fracas began as they tried to get him down off the van. He was my hero after that.

In the circs, I'd quite like to see Elton John turn up late - and leathered - today and then start grappling with Security. Maybe a wig could slip forward over his eyes or something, to raucous cheers......

I don't know, the crowd seemed to be loving GnR.

They've never been my cup of tea but just look how the crowd reacted to some worldwide classics throughout their set. That's why they're headlining. That's why they sell out stadiums worldwide.

Lizzo couldn't pull that off, lets be honest, most people couldn't name 3 songs of hers.

I'm talking about performance. I didn't have a clue about Lizzo before yesterday, but I was far more impressed by her stage show than GnR's, and I'd be more inclined to go to one of her shows than theirs.

Having a lot of well-known songs is one thing. Delivering them in an entertaining manner is another.

Sorry mate - would have been a lot easier to type Rory Gallagher.

Listened to an interview where Slash was talking about his musical influences and I can't remember whether it was one of his studio albums (Deuce etc) or Irish Tour but it apparently blew his socks off.

Around the similar time also saw Johnny Marr speaking about Rory and sighted the same thing. Listening to one of his albums completely changed the way he approached the guitar (which I'd never really heard in Marr's playing before).

He was also playing Rory's strat (the one in the picture I attached).........
Rory Gallagher was a bit pre punk wasn’t he, broke the mould of the BOF music (as NME called boring old fart) of the early 70’s, Pink Floyd type of music. Very raw guitar playing, utterly brilliant but not commercially mainstream. I bought one of his albums on the back of seeing Rory on the OGWT where I think he made a few appearances with Whispering Bob and Annie Nightingale as hosts. His guitar looked like something he’d rescued from a skip but he made it sing, I’m ashamed I’d forgotten about Rory when I listed some all time great guitarists, he’s definitely up there with the best.

Sure, but you need the material as a Headliner too, not just a good entertainer

There's dozens of brilliant performers every year at Glastonbury but they haven't got the hits that have remained classics for many years. Like I said, that's why these acts sell out stadiums on all sides of the world.

Lizzo has never even had a number 1 album in her own country. Here she's had two albums, one charted number 6 and one number 30.

Very hard to pull off a 2 hour set without a wealth of material that people know. There's a lot more that makes a Headliner than just having a decent stage show.

To be honest, if he hadn't been in the Pistols, he'd just be another backing musician.
I doubt that many people will be watching just to see Glen!
Indeed

In a way, he's made a career out of being kicked out of the Pistols. I shouldn't imagine he made a great deal out of his brief career with them first time round. Everything else has been built off the back of that. Fair play, he's milked it for 45 years.

Seems a nice bloke though, so good on him

Why, their catalogue is fine for their fans but for a festival crowd not made up of solely their fans , its correct.
They only made 6 studio albums, one of covers and Chinese Democracy which was fucking shit

I mean you could say that about most headliners I suppose.

Take the Rolling Stones, I reckon the majority of the audience at Glastonbury would only care for half a dozen songs, same with Elton John tonight.

Its just the nature of a festival. Which artists could fill a set that the whole of the festival audience loves from top to bottom? Not too many.

Stick Oasis on the pyramid stage and most of the younger audience won't give a shite about hearing The Hindu Times or whatever shite they churned out later, they wanna hear Wonderwall.

It's the nature of a festival crowd. Go to a Guns n Roses concert away from a festival and I'd say a lot of people bought tickets for their gig because they know most of the material, album tracks etc..

Who we all looking forward to today?

Yesterday was amazing, I literally spent the day in front of the TV, from 12 dinner time to 12 midnight watching everything, had to be the best day I've had watching Glasto.

Waiting for Depeche Mode to finally stop their Glastonbury spat and agree to do a set. Just one. Doesn't have to a headline, could be legend, just get it done. Top band live.
Thankfully that ship sailed years ago. They've never had to pimp themselves out like the rest, they’ll just stick to selling stadiums out around the world playing to their own fans.

Christine and the Queens just came on the iPlayer.

I guess that outfit didn't cost her a lot to buy lol
