Manchester City won the Champions League and Qatar hosted the World Cup, the oil states’ bid to take over the game is set to enter phase three. By 2030, writes Miguel Delaney, the sport will have been reshaped entirely​

This idea that the purchase of a football club is a sportswashing exercise is such a flawed concept that it’s difficult to understand how it’s gained traction.

If you take the UAE for example, few people had more than very basic knowledge of human rights concerns related to the country and Dubai was becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world plus a huge migrant community (ex-pats in our case;-)) chose to live there for work opportunities. In the last 15 years since our club was purchased by the sheikh, there has been a huge concerted campaign by large sections of the media to draw attention to human rights concerns in the country, and it has been unfairly painted as one of the worst in the world. Obviously it has its very real issues but far from sportswashing them to insignificance, ownership of our club by an Emirati has had the opposite effect of sportswashing and has just drawn more attention to them, and arguably has set the scene for human rights to be improved due to all the global attention.

The most ludicrous thing they could possibly do as a sportswashing enterprise is to buy a football club due to the intense rivalries with other clubs and the consequent focus on anything that other clubs’ supporters can throw at us.

Proper sportswashing would be sponsorship or hosting of major events like the FA Cup or F1 where the funding isn’t going to one team at the expense of others and as a result the country is seen in a good light.

Exactly mate. Pure racist, that's all it is. American have literally just passed a bill to make abortion illegal. Where is all the media scramble to highlight this and link it to man United and Liverpool?

Enquiries don’t necessarily provide proof, look at the Paris “enquiry” for the Dippers final against Real. No mention whatsoever about “blag” tickets adding to the problem. I’m not saying the coach hadn’t used racist language but just like the Yorkshire Cricket affair the truth can be bent and subjective views can be aired.

Martin Moxon was vilified in that report but Colin Graves whose trust is owed £15m from Yorkshire Cricket said Moxen didn’t have a racist bone in his body. Azeem Rafiq who made the allegations tweeted anti semitic remarks but that was brushed over in the enquiry.

Believe what you want to but it’s not a court and nothing was proven, also, wtf has has shagging a player from his academy got to do with it? My mate’s brother is married to a footballer he met whilst he was a coach at Burnley Ladies team back in 2000, they’re still together.

Ffs, give up the crusade.

What an absolute wanker he is, I usually wouldn’t condone violence towards anyone other than despots like Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, Thatcher, etc but this fella although no physical threat to anyone is walking the tightrope of a real good twatting, his insidious views will put him at risk. If he starts on Saudi’s Newcastle he shouldn’t ever accept an invitation to their Embassy, they’ve got form.

I’m not on a crusade. I don’t have any strong feelings either way towards her or the ex manager.

But when people continue to spin the lie, every time her name is mentioned, that she got the manager sacked because he wouldn’t pick her, by inventing claims of racism, I’ll continue to call them out.

Not sure why you’re asking me to try and explain why shagging a player is a sackable offence? I had no say in it. Just stating a fact that is why he got sacked. I imagine it’s similar to why teachers are barred from shagging pupils at colleges, even though they’re both adults.
