It's a shame. I absolutely love Gerrard for reasons we have all eulogised on down the years and I won't try to turn this into an impassioned defence of him because, frankly, none of us really know what he's like behind closed doors.

To me he's always seemed like a nice, shy, incredibly driven bloke. Never interested in celebrity, just interested in playing his football and doing his best for Liverpool. I think it's also fair to say he's never come across as the absolute brightest spark and is it any wonder that someone who's basically spent his whole life in the footballing bubble is less clued up on international politics? It's something I said about the England team at the world cup, too. I think it's unrealistic to expect them to have all the 'correct' moral judgements.

You can say "educate yourself" but it's incredibly complex. For example, Gerrard reads amnesty international and thinks fuck me that's not great I won't go there. Next press conference, Steven what do you think about this sponsor who Liverpool had during your time with the club, what do you think about this club's owners, what do you think about the UK government doing deals with them, what do you think about this, that and the other. If footballers go down the route of turning down jobs purely on politics then it's a slippery slope and they're going to have to be incredibly well equipped to deal with the resulting questions. Jürgen dared ask a question or two about city's ownership and he got labelled a xenophobe, an allegation that BBC sport repeated on their website for the world to read.

When it comes to club ownership and world cups being hosted I think that's squarely on governing bodies to sort out which is much more realistic. When it comes down to players saying yes or no to bags of money, working class lads who've basically never lived a normal life outside of football, it's hard for me to feel too angry or upset with them.

I think there's something about the way the internet has polarised us. Most of the people here talking about his legacy being tarnished, calling him all sorts would melt if they ever bumped into him and thank him for 2005. He's a normal bloke who's had his head turned by unfathomable wealth. Id have loved him to come out and say he's against it but I don't think it's his job to do so and I don't blame him.
