The Pro Road Cycling Thread

I don’t know pal tbf. All I’m saying is, having listened to the Lance Armstrong podcast last night and read some bits & pieces, the size of the gap, not just to Pogacar but to Wout van Aert, who was definitely going full gas to try and win a stage for himself too, just doesn’t add up.
Peter Kennaugh pointed out Jumbo must’ve known he was in such good form to post those numbers for some time; you don’t just turn that form on overnight (or surely you don’t!), so he’s likely been toying with Pog the last couple of weeks.
In terms of freakish winning margins, the worlds greatest ever 100m sprinter Bolt had a 3% gap over his nearest rivals when at his peak, when he looked like he was jogging his sprint and the rest of the field were toiling.

Yesterday he was 5% quicker than Pog.

That kind of margin just doesn’t really happen, not that I’m aware anyway. I think they said in TT terms in cycling 1961 was the last time a bigger winning margin.

His watts per kilo for that 13 min period was apparently “at” the limits of what’s possible. Even Lance and his panel were staggered.

I’ve been watching pro cycling long enough and read enough books from Kimmage, to Walsh, to Hamilton, to know that when it feels and looks as wrong that did yesterday, one ought to be highly sceptical.
I agree totally with everything you say how it looks.
After what happened with the Armstrong era I can't for the life of me think they would cheat so blatantly and I like to think he's just a freak of nature.
I hope for the good of cycling he's clean.

It's great watching racing with the wife isn't it?
Me I wish that I could ride as quick as they do.
Mrs Mozzer yes but they are 40 years younger, 5 stone lighter, and they don't drink like a fish.
Me cheers love.

You got of lightly I have to explain the tactics? It's hard work

Sadly for those who have watched racing over the years, these type of performances usually are so great because of doping. The margin is huge, and then Pog followed it up by completely blowing up yesterday so he has clearly pushed beyond his limits, whilst Vin just went off again yesterday. He's got a huge margin, and almost every other rider has cracked at some point and lost time. He had a wobble where Pog rode away from him, but nothing more. He's a very good time trial rider but he isn't that much better than everyone else. He outdid some brilliant TT riders on the flat part of the stage, which was what had alarm bells ringing for me.

Yea some whispers in the french press saying the same, the gap was huge in a 22k tt

Don’t know what industry Jumbo Visma are into but my guess is it’s the jiffy bag industry!
They remind me of Team Sky…

Better prepared than the rest. The way Vingegaard rode on the tt, it was clear from the get go, that he was going to win it.
Lol, oh he’s the strongest rider alright. By far. Remind you of anyone?
Froome..

To enjoy pro cycling you have to enjoy what you’re watching and reconcile your mind to the fact that some (most) may not be on bread and water.
It was never clean. Ever.

I'm sure there are some competitors who ride clean, but those leading the pack are certainly under suspicion in EVERY race.
Merckx: positive
Hinault: positive
Coppi: positive
Simpson: positive

All failed tests in grand tours yet none are/ were stigmatised in the way Pantani , Armstrong etc were.
Wiggins , Jiffy bag.
The list is endless.
The only (grand tour / monument winning) rider I’ve ever thought was 100% clean was Lemond, a freak of nature.
But I still love watching it. You just have to park that suspicion to the back of your head.

Agree with you and @johnnytapia but there are times when it crosses the line, when it goes too far, when the unreality breaches the barriers you keep in your mind, and I’m afraid that TT was one for me.

Yeah. He was cleary streets ahead and it was more than just physicality and conditioning in my opinion.

An out and out climber (Vingegaard, Rasmussen, Pantani etc) annihilating the rest of the field in a TT is always a huge red flag for me.
I was struck by Vingegaard’s interview two days ago “I’m definitely not taking anything that’s illegal.” I interpreted that, rightly or wrongly, that he’s taking stuff that’s either:
Legal - vitamin injections
Not yet been banned - something akin to Tramadol/ performance enhancing
Maybe there’s a new EPO out there, maybe they’re micro-dosing, maybe they’re on “pan y agua”.
It usually, eventually, comes out in the wash, a la Armstrong, Millar etc.
Doesn’t stop me loving watching it though.
