Kalvin Phillips

Don't pretend he was good. Akanji was our only CB with a pass % over 67% after Rodri got sent off.. This is because Phillips doesn't provide that foil for our defence to play off, instead he likes to hide behind oppo pressers. Does it for England all the time too.

If Kova was fit and came on there instead we'd have still completely dominated possession. Instead we had 31% because our dm can't play under pressure.

He had as many good moments as bad but as a DCM, it can't be that way.

It can't be easy to come in with no real rhythm but damn. Idk what the answer is.

Fucking hell there some really screw loose on this forum, Rodri did the major fuckup that will cost the fucking match (Fortunately it didn't happen) yet Philips get the most blame.

It's fucking ten man on the pitch, it will be harder than your usual match.
Rodri has plenty of credit in the bank that’s the difference

I thought he looked fine given the circumstances.

I think it says it all that in the match day thread after he went shoulder to shoulder with the forest player near the end, where the forest player ended up on his arse and kalvin came away with the ball and Taylor gave forest a free kick, there was a poster moaning that kalvin was weak and it was shoulder to shoulder! He put the forest player on his arse and won the ball, got a poor decision from a dreadful ref... that's just seeing what you want to see.

He's not going to turn it around and become a starter now, but the hyperbole over that particular performance is OTT. You should all be in the rodri thread going mental about him losing his mind.

Two of Bielsa's proteges: Mendy and Phillips, are the shittiest transfers City has made during the last 10 years.. :D

bielsaball is not that similar to pep's, its much more focused on intensity and running a lot than technique but somehow even at a lower pace philips struggles to play for us

I'll try not to judge him on a game where we were outnumbered in the middle but he really needs to ease himself in by doing the simple things well. Show for the ball to give the CBs an option. Play the simple pass. Break up play on the counter. Let the creative players do the rest. If he does that well in the next few games then I don't think Pep will complain.

He doesn't have to be the best player on the pitch like Rodri tends to be, he just needs to be good enough and I think that expectation weighs him down.
