HS2 - Birmingham to Manchester scrapped.

I don’t know much about this but a bloke on radio this morning was saying - it’s the government’s fault that costs are out of control because they’ve built tunnels for most part between London and Birmingham and tunnels cost 10 times more than natural rail tracks.

You can almost guarantee a strike would have taken place on the day of it opening anyway. I never understood this project. A complete waste of money. Transport problems are everywhere in this country and I’m not sure what this would have solved. The money should have been spent on improving the road and rail networks for everyone.

The workplace has changed since Covid anyway so hardly any need for it. I read the other day that Meta have paid over £150m to get out of a lease on a London building that they never occupied!

I hope it does get scrapped. Huge waste of money and it destroys large areas of countryside.

To me London would benefit the most from hs2 - large numbers of southerners easily able to commute from Manchester

France is bigger and emptier which makes building much easier there.

If Sunak announced a ringfence as you suggest (which makes sense to me), would anyone believe him?

They’ll probably announce the electrification of Manchester to Leeds - yet again…. That’s been announced 12 times in the last 20 years and cancelled every time. The government simply has no commitment to delivering anything outside of London. Spending on Major infrastructure projects has been exclusively focussed on London and the SE for decades…. Crossrail, Jubilee Line extension, HS1, DLR, the Olympics etc….

I'm not disagreeing that there's a skewing, but it's strange how little it's helped them with how London votes.

At least we have half a dozen shiny new yellow buses and mile upon mile of empty bus lanes and cycle lanes.
That’s a thought, why didn’t Sunak attack all these cycle lanes? It’s bad enough cutting the roads down without having to drive over fallen bikes.

Our roads are shite, cannot understand why cyclists would take the risk of being usurped by a great gif pothole.

The Meta office was a five minute walk from Euston, ironically.

Absolute white elephant. Do we really need to get to the shithole that is London 15 minutes quicker than we can now?

Billions of pounds wasted

Part of it is Modern Politicians know in their time none of this will be finished. So any long term projects like HS2 don’t interest them at at. None of this current shower of Arseholes in Parliament have the interests of the Country at heart. All they are bothered about is their own Careers.
He's got a world of problems but don't see how cancelling it can possibly be a good thing for him. Surely committing to it would win votes and let the next fucker worry about paying for it.

HS2 wasn’t just to speed up the journey times between cities, it’s also way to remove passenger trains off the older tracks so it can be used for freight.

I’ve never wanted HS2, but the reason above is a major advantage and it is required

Piss-ups and breweries come to mind. The Victorians must be rolling in their graves.

its the west to east that needs investment-at peak times the journey from York onwards is so full its difficult for people trying to exit because of overcrowding.

I take your point about London and the wasted money, but the economic benefit from HS2 was strongest between Manchester and Birmingham. It would free up capacity on local lines, and the existing network could provide a more frequent service.

Unfortunately, because we are being led by idiots, it was started in the most expensive place with the weakest economic argument, and is now going to run on a line stopping so short of city centres there will be no time saving using it.

So after all the multiple tens of billions that has been spent in the South East. The coffers are now empty. Anybody who fell for this Tory levelling up bollocks is a chump.
Everyone probably fell for it…….you can’t legislate for liars. They make shit up as they go along and revise it when needed…

But the next lot will be no different.

It was NEVER about getting to London quicker but it was mooted that at the outset which was a stupid fecking argument.

It is and always was about capacity.

Just read the headline on BBC news about how the PM will not be pushed into a premature decision on the Manchester to Birmingham link.

Jesus, if after 14 years of fuckwittery is premature, we’re all fucked.

Yet, he inferred only a couple of weeks ago enough of going back on our word.

I wait with baited breath.
