Maddison deemed ‘not city level’ by many on here in the summer.

Lol.
Wish I had time to dig up all the crap spouted by the transfer geniuses here about Maddison.
OUT: Gündoğan, Mahrez, Palmer, Laporte, Mendy
IN: Gvardiol, Nunes, Kovačić, Doku

5/10, coming players are not better that the ones that departed City.
You don't just replace someone with the level of Gundogan and Mahrez and naively expect some unproven(Nunes), idling(Kovacic) and raw(Doku) player to come in and replace them without a drop in quality. Those players are top level players with exceptional skill sets, replacing them will not be easy.

Even Gvardiol talented as he is, is not someone who greatly improves from what Laporte offered. Add that to the fact he cost a pretty penny while we literally giveaway Laporte for free and I'm here left scratching my head at the logic of our transfer business this season.

It's way too early to be having these kinds of conversations. We can maybe start having them next summer, but even then it's no use judging a load of new lads after one year. We've seen countless times that players signed by Pep aren't generally at their strongest in the first season. For what it's worth, Gvardiol, Nunes, Kovacic, and Doku have all been absolutely fine so far. They've all got things they need to iron out but the same could be said of a bunch of our players right now. We're not a club that signs for the present moment like United do, we're always thinking about how each new signing will fit into our squad over the next few years.

Lots of people are saying we haven't replaced Gundogan and Mahrez but five years ago these same people were saying that Gundogan and Mahrez weren't any good for us either - that Mahrez was no Leroy and that Gundogan was no David Silva. It took Gundogan until the 3rd or 4th year of his City career for the majority of our fans to really appreciate him. Do you remember the criticism that double pivot with him and Rodri used to get? Then after 18 months of it "hindering" us, something suddenly clicked and we never looked back. Now we look at Gundogan with tears in our eyes and we're convinced nobody can ever replace him. Just give it some time.

Looking forward to 2028 when a 34-year-old Kovacic has been sold to Dinamo Zagreb and there are posts about how a 24-year-old Gavi just isn't providing the same level of control as Kovacic used to, etc.

For me: Gvardiol 7.5, Doku 7, Kovacic 6, Nunes 5.
Gvardiol shows good promise, imo.
Unfortunately I can see us regretting Nunes long term, although we were desperate for numbers last summer, I have watched him carefully, his effort and body language is not the best imo, not sure this will wash with Pep. Fingers crossed I'm wrong!

fucking mediocre window.

teams should be shit scared of the treble winners but they arent. Villa ripped us apart instead of sitting back, Spurs came to Etihad with half their side out injured still gave it a go and got a point.

we should have gone out and strengthen the squad for opponents to think wow these guys won the treble and now signed even more top players.

had Doku not start this well (kind of unexpectedly) there would have been zero positive in the transfer we made.
thats before we start to look into the players we decided to sell.

what we do in some of the tougher fixtures compared to last year its night and day.
Villa away
Spurs home
Pool home
Chelsea away
Arsenal away
Wolves away

this was 16 points out of 18 last season.
this year?
3 points out of 18.

brutal.

and I guess we still go to Anfield, White Hart Lane and shit the bed as usual.

The only net positive game has been Win vs United at OT. Otherwise we have been net negative already by 10 points. December has just started and fixture pile up will start now. You will see people say come. May we will be winning by 10 points etc but there isn't clutch creativity left in squad when Kev is out. All safe ball carriers and rolls Royce ™ players, no one tk grind the win out

This window was a lost opportunity in a season where we became immortal.

I often think of times how the fuck did we end up with Merlin,Aguero, Toure or even KDB when we were never a regular CL finalist or back to back league title winners or Treble winners.

And this window, where we could have easily prepared the next treble winning team but we got complacent.
This policy of letting any player leave if their head turn a little works out when we have better replacement in waiting.
We didnt prepare for that.

A model like Brighton only works you have scouted similar players before you do the big sell. Other wise your luck dries up and you become a Southampton.

Some players can't help themselves expressing negativity with their body language, (eg facial expressions, throwing up arms, not trying sufficiently, sulking etc).

Sometimes exceptional players are that good, people turn a blind eye to this, but unfortunately Nunes is not that good.
On what occasion has Nunes not tried sufficiently or sulked. I have seen him once throw his arms which to me suggested he was a little disappointed that a through ball wasn’t played to him. I’m not an expert on body language but I guess you are

If throwing your arms in the air is the epitome of sulking, then what does that make Haaland? He’s a veritable wind turbine in some games.

well apparently the first choice transfers were Bellingham, Gvardiol and Kovacic and we got two of the three? Rice was the back up option to Bellingham and we all know that we have a value and dont go over it plus i genuinely think that Rice wanted Arsenal more than us so that plays a part in the clubs thinking. It seems that Mahrez has confirmed in an interview that once he got the offer from Saudi that he told the club he would like to take up the opportunity and we found a way to make that happen and Doku has made an exciting start here?

As I said above "...Sometimes exceptional players are that good, people turn a blind eye to this, but unfortunately Nunes is not that good."

Haaland, KDB, Sane and Cancelo have all been prone to occassional negative body language. Pep overlooks the first two players because their output and world class talent more than makes up for that. With Cancelo and Sane Pep decided it was right to move them on.

Nunes is not world class, personally I think, like Philips, we overpaid and should have avoided him and got a better quality player. It was difficult I admit when Paqueta our 3rd choice couldn't move because of the betting investigations. I hope Nunes improves and Pep sees a player that can benefit our side, but at the moment, that seems a long way off.

Nunes hasn’t been on the pitch long enough for me to get wound up about his body language, though he doesn’t strike me as someone who smiles a lot- should join us in the match day thread! However, Nunes, like Phillips, is patently not going to replace Rodri on a like-for-like basis, so unless Guardiola finally settles on an alternative midfield balance that can accommodate his skill set, then his participation will remain bitty and he’ll struggle to nail down a starting position.

If a player can get ten consecutive starts, we can more fairly assess their attributes and what they offer, though that level of consistent selection tends to happen only when a side is winning.

I agree Nunes, like Philips, has not played very much for us. However Pep is with the players practically every day assessing their composure, skills, passing, attitude etc and if they're good enough to play for us. I trust his judgement.

I looked in detail about Nunes when he was at his previous club and personally wouldn't have bought him. I didn't want us to buy Philips either!

I am not sure either will get a run at starts if they're not convincing Pep in training, especially now we are out of the EFL Cup.
