Quitting work on the spot

Love the attitude in the bottom paragraph. You sound like a good man. However, take a step back and think if others would do the same for you. The likelihood is no, and you would be replaced before your body went cold. Look after yourself and your family first, fuck the consequences and other colleagues; they're just people you're forced to spend a lot of time with.

I know this is a fair comment and in all likelihood they wouldn’t do the same for me. But I’ll still probably end up doing it because I think it’s the right thing to do, not because people would reciprocate it.

I’m not cynical enough for this business stuff :) Maybe I should go into a new industry… interpretive dance or something.

I’ve been weighing up leaving my job for some time. In short, the CEO is an egotist. Which would be fine… many of them are and I’ve dealt with worse… problem is he is my line manager. He completely ignores me 99% of the time but when he’s got a bee in his bonnet about something the other 1% of the time he will be a totally unbearable shit.

The big issue is that that 99% of the time he ignores me is when I need things to do my role e.g., people in my team, budget, sign-off on work. It makes it impossible to functionally do a good job. Which makes it all the more galling when he pulls me up on something I’ve been asking about for months.

The final straw was last night when he sent me a long rant at 11pm on a Saturday. A long rant in which he was unhappy with something I’d done. I take huge issue with some of his reasoning about this particular thing - but his tone was deeply unpleasant and it seemed like he was honestly a bit drunk.

I’ve drafted up my resignation letter, I won’t be disrespected. I’m going to send it tomorrow as a nice early Christmas present. I don’t have anything lined up though so hold a place in the queue for me at the soup kitchen. People might advise me to wait until I have something new but I’m not waiting because I have a long notice period plus it is impacting my mental health tossing and turning at night… not to mention the principle of it.

Has anybody else taken a leap of faith and quit on the spot? Any creative suggestions for serving my notice? (Before anybody suggests it, I’m not shitting anywhere)

How are ya buddy, I remember you posting about this previously. Well done on beginning to take the steps to change the situation. I'm sure you're well aware of the potential difficulties in literally quitting on the spot (unless you've something else lined up of course), so I'll not go on too much about that.

Emails at 11pm on a Saturday though. I dunno who these people think they are, and it's way too common as well. This is what is called "glorification of busy", many wear their "long hours" as a badge of pride.

I've previously quit and served a notice which wasn't too painful. My last role however, I was effectively managed out and put on a PIP that had ever moving goalposts. In terms of the literal wording written I was meeting every objective, only for my manager to explain what was  really meant every time I showed my work. Couldn't win, so I made it painful for them by refusing to back down and basically said, I won't be leaving, so you'll have to push me.

Haha top man, bet that was an eye opener working out there. Elf and safety? Isn't that an English or German thing. Wages paid when the gaffer fancies.
Worked with a couple of Greeks and their mantra was, 'Siga Siga' (slowly slowly). Was only there 3 weeks and i think they managed to drill a few holes. £25 quid for 6 days a week.

I’m well mate ta, hope you’re well! Yes I did touch on it in a thread a few months back so you can see this isn’t a snap decision. I’ve had a few of our competitors reaching out to me but my non-compete clause worries me a bit… I’m sure I’ll work something out.

I totally agree and it wasn’t just an email! I don’t generally check my emails on Saturday night so I wouldn’t have seen it normally but he messaged me through my personal LinkedIn first to make sure I saw it and then sent me a follow up work email 30 mins later continuing his tantrum. The farce is that I know he doesn’t actually work as hard as he makes out. It’s all an illusion, I know his PA and he blocks whole days out of his calendar to basically do whatever the fuck he wants and then spends his evenings sending emails to make himself look busier.

Sorry you had to go through that though, sounds painful - honestly sometimes it is worth digging your heels in like you did. In my case it’s more non-sensical because I’m considered a high performer. If that’s the case how does he treat the low performers?! This is one of those cases where I could choose to stick around indefinitely picking up my pay check twiddling my thumbs all week until they get sick of me or I can go and find something worthwhile to do with my life… and I’m still relatively young and have no kids so I think I’ll do the latter.

Go on sick and fuck the twat over you’re playing into his hands. Seems you should look into constructive dismissal if I was you mate.

Quitting on the spot is a breach of contract. Delete Linked In and get another job.

I wouldn't have stayed more than a day In a place like that. I've never taken shit from a boss in any job I've done. Never been sacked either which seems odd but there you go.

To clarify, I’m not talking about just walking off the job and going awol. I’m talking about serving notice. When I say on the spot I just mean doing it on a whim without having any real plan of what comes next, I’m not advocating breaching contracts.

I’m not working at present but I have an interview tomorrow for a job I didn’t even apply for. They found me on Totaljobs and rang me!

As a former Court Clerk made redundant during civil service cutbacks, I’d dealt with this legal firm regularly and they’re established.

One opportunity is often all it takes.

You worked in a court? You have never mentioned it before...

I respect that, honestly. I’m a bit of a soft touch, as is probably apparent from my posts on this thread. I try to see the good in people and give them the benefit of the doubt but can’t say that’s ever helped me in life.

Go on the sick have a top Christmas and get that notice in, ready for whatever challenge comes next.

A lot of bosses, managers supervisors are bullies or pass on grief they get from above onto others. Know your rights and refuse to take their shit and they usually move on to someone else.

I work in construction with cranes. Plenty of lads go off sick who are not sick and go and work somewhere else for a week to see if the grass is greener.
Some come back some don't.

My advice: hand in your notice immediately, look for another job but just don’t burn your bridges until you’re safely installed in employment elsewhere. Save any revenge for later.

No job is worth your health. And no employee deserves to be treated like you have been.

I quit my job on the spot earlier this year. I was working for the most bullying despicable bitch of a CEO I’ve had the misfortune to come across. I was still in probation so had a week’s notice. It was unbearable.

She got fired as CEO six weeks after I left. I wasn’t the only one she had been outrageous towards. Unfortunately she is still lurking in public life but I’m waiting for the right moment to get my revenge.

As long as you have 3+ worth of savings to live off, you’ll be fine. Having 24/7 to look for a job while being rested and healthy really shortens the process.

It turned out I didn’t need to use even a month’s worth of savings as I found a great job just four weeks later and could start right away.

Guess it helps I don’t have children, or pets, or a mortgage, but as long as you do your sums the answer is obvious.

If you quit on the spot with nothing else lined up then and you dont have at least a 3 month financial safety net then you would be very foolish.

You would also become my personal hero.
