That's bollocks, players often walk back on the pitch after an ACL injury because walking in straight lines isn't a problem, rather, turning is.

A good staff knows almost immediately if its an ACL or not. If they suspected it was an ACL there's no way he'd be let back on the field. See it every week in the NFL and college football.
