Blue Moon Playlist Review Club - Season 2 - Episode 32 - threespires - Could have been a Contender (pg 472)

Yes, this is where threads like this work - for me, the feedback is an all-important part of the whole exercise. Throwing up YouTube videos and then moving on to the next song doesn't work for me.

While we are on it, another disadvantage of YouTube videos, particularly without a description of what they are etc, is they are not searchable on the threads. Something I find an issue on the new music thread for example, I come across a band I'm sure I heard mentioned there, and I try to find it, but it is useless, because it is lost among pages and pages of nameless box previews. That without clicking on, waiting, moving to open in app so you can see the title, getting through the ads, you can't even tell what they are.

Agree on the feedback and further discussion, after missing out on it, a day or so late is fine, but midway through the week I didn't want to distract from the theme at hand. So I'll do it once in the second week. Be interesting to hear spires' take too, as it was his theme, whether he got the romance of travel he was looking for. Ditto doogle with the power of water.

Agreed entirely. You were early, but you weren't alone.

Unfortunately the week leading up to Christmas at work didn't allow me to listen until last weekend, but @Mancitydoogle and I didn't leave you hanging alone.

There were a lot of new first tunes I heard, including my top 6 back on p 220.

My bad, I misplaced the end of that whole week in the lead-up to the holidays, will circle back and look properly, or refresh my memory.

Saving my last song to hopefully close this playlist

A pretty powerful song to close their stellar 2015 album, this is one of my favorite album closers anywhere.

Just let the drums in this one that come in 42 seconds into the track drive this one home as it builds up momentum to its final 2 crashing minutes of an ending.

There is not a beach trip I take looking out at the Atlantic where this song does not get played.

Hope you enjoy it - if you make it to the end of the playlist :-).

Happy New Year in 5 or so hours to those of you across our Atlantic!

Foals – "A Knife in the Ocean"

Oh, what came of the things I once believed?
Oh all, lost to the depths of a hungry sea

Any volunteers for monday that haven't been yet this round? A couple more seem to have become regulars, so feel free to shout. @Out on blue 6 a notable absence this week, hopefully all ok.

Transport Playlist, belated thoughts.

Enjoyed the more 'soulful' side of this, with Etta James, Isaac Hayes, John Coltrane, Gregory Porter and Ides of March, which was my standout of the list.

The Richard Thompson song grew on me. The Saw Doctors for all their humour, can be poignant too. The Cure track was great, and loved me a bit of mewithoutyou.

Other mentions, gaz coombes, sea power, black mountain, rezillos, joe bonamassa, dawes, judie tzuke.

There was noticeably more here that I hadn't previously heard of, than what I had, which was good.

Overall, had a different mood to this week's playlist, given it is the same set of posters I'd say the themes do affect the general feel of a playlist.

Anyone have a list or a pointer to concepts that have been used already?

Being a newcomer, I wouldn't want to repeat any ones already done.

Out of blue 6 replied today to @LGWIO's album selection of Aphex Twin with glowing praise ("groundbreaking"), so should be.

Yes, similar to the Album thread, Rob tends to update the opening post on page 1 and adds to the list.

Look for the latest round at the bottom of the post.

Mancitydoogle - Water

A very good list once again. It's a struggle to do the length of these playlists real justice, but bizarrely I found time to give my favourite 10 or so a second listen.

The Big Winner(s)

"The River"
- Bruce Springsteen - Obviously a song I know back-to-front and in my sleep. Not my favourite album from his classic period, but this is undoubtedly one of his best songs. In fact it's one of my favourite songs of all time. Love the story aspect, the use of the acoustic and harmonica, and the way it speeds up with the "But I remember driving in my brother's car ...." line is majestic.

"River Man" - Nick Drake - I hear a lot about Nick Drake but don't know a lot about him. I guess he was one of those songwriters who could have achieved a lot had he not died tragically young.

"Rain and Snow" - The Be Good Tanyas - The sound of the banjo/mandolin strings is brilliant and it's well performed.

"Ocean Deep" - Greenleaf - Loved the sound of this - is it prog or psych rock? Seems like they are Swedish stoner rockers.

"The Rain Song" - Led Zeppelin - Thanks to OB1 and others, I've listened to so much LZ over the last few years but I can't remember whether I listened to this album or not! With the simple start, the bending of the strings and the increasing orchestral backing, this song is sublime.

Best of the list that I hadn't previously heard

"The Ocean" - Led Zeppelin
"Swim Until You Can't See Land" - Frightened Rabbit
"The Water" - Johnny Flynn
"Lady of the Lake" - Starcastle
"The Ocean" - Dar Williams
"Rainwater" - Black Tree Crow
"Ship on Fire" - Zeal & Ardor - just the right side of shouty. A bit of Omen-esque chanting as well, always a bit of a bonus.
"River Runs" - Rod Picott
"Summer Rain" - A-Ha
"Waved" - Portugal, The Man
"Horizontigo" - Lau
"Waves" - Sam Baker
"The Snows of Banquo IV" - Wo Fat
"Wash Me Clean" - Lillie Mae
"Down to the Well" - Kevin Gordon

Tracks I knew but enjoyed listening to again

"Bread & Water" - Ryan Bingham
"Harlem River Blues" - Justin Townes Earle
"Riverman" - Noel Gallagher - First heard this thanks to BlueHammer's nomimation in the album thread - it's the best track on the album
"The Tears of a Clown" - Smokey Robinson
"In Its Infancy (The Waterfall)" - My Morning Jacket - bought this album a few years ago. This is a an unusual track but I love it.
"Wave of Mutilation" - Pixies - another I first heard thanks to the album review thread
"When the Levee Breaks" - Led Zeppelin
"Lakeside Park" - Rush
"Down to the River to Pray" - Alison Krauss - From the soundtrack of a fantastic film
"Rain in the Summertime" - The Alarm
"Lake Charles" - Lucinda Williams - another fantastic song that I first heard on the album review thread. Features superb dobro and accordion.

Mancitydoogle - Water

Greenleaf have a few good albums, it is nothing particularly outrageous but it works. And the singer has a bit of a cornell tone at times.

Zeal and Ardor, write some pretty intriguing songs. I think if they swapped the Djent for something more radio friendly or even poppy, they would probably be quite big.

I mostly didn't want to repeat the themes from Season 1, but now see that was a totally differently weekly concept without the current Episode format. My current idea is clear of a repeat of the Episodes in Season 2.

If someone wants a go of it, that's fine, but I'm ready with one (just in case).
